This will only be of interest if you're affected by the whole 911
update / 3G service suspension in effect now, as a Rogers customer.

This blog post summarizes the current situation pretty well:
http://www.litui.net/archives/796

Although it mentions complaining to the CRTC, that won't help us
affected customers in the short term.

I am gathering information on how to best stop my contract and I won't
be paying any penalties, as I consider Rogers to be in breach of
contract. I will most probably take this to small court claims (in
Quebec) and I will document my process in this thread so anyone
interested can do the same and perhaps even help me get there faster.

The sad situation is a great platform like Android can't be considered
free at all when Google and HTC leave a provider's stupidity and lack
of business ethics & standards treat it like they have.

The Android in Canada blog also has a thread about this:
http://www.androidincanada.ca/news/rogers-begins-pushing-out-android-rom-update-for-htc-magicdream/

And I am gathering Rogers customers testimonials and my own problems
with Rogers at:
http://identi.ca/group/rogerssucks

Sorry Rogers, welcome to 2010.

So now that you have the update can you comment? Was there any
upgrade to the OS at all or was it just to address the 911 function?

I can share my experience with you as I updated on Saturday.

It is not a version update, it's still 1.5. However the new "Sense" interface is an improvement - more screens and a much more polished look overall. Several built in apps are improved too. I prefer the GDE home replacement at the moment and installed it right away but my friend has kept the default and likes it very much..

It seems faster, but that's just my impression not a measurement. Still no paid apps and they have made my Market Enabler stop working so I can't get them by that route any more.

I've experimented with my old Dream phone, which they replaced free with the Magic (as it is upgradeable) but didn't ask to be sent back. It works fairly well on WiFi alone without a SIM card installed but seems to pause from time to time and the screen becomes unresponsive for more than a few seconds sometimes. I'm not sure if this is because it is designed to work only with a SIM card or if the speed etc. was like that but not so noticeable before I had a newer model for comparison. Interestingly, it still works on the Market

At this point it's clear from several public forums and posts that
Rogers update was only a malicious move to cripple the HTC Dream &
Magic phones.

I urge anyone reading this NOT to upgrade their phones. I realize it
may already be too late but make sure you search you options instead
of using Rogers' update. Using the "CoreSense" ROM is only one of many
solutions that have been circulating, so make sure you research this
first instead of upgrading and cripling your device.

I'm really glad to have waited a few day, until the instruction to keep my cyanogenmod were out!

Wow, sadly, now Rogers is blocking me from making any calls...
