Hello everybody,

I just took a very quick look to Android NDK r5 and as far as I've
seen it will change qt on android forever. It seems now we can drop
Java part (or at least 99%).

I'll come with more info later.

BogDan.

That's great news, but we'll not be able to use it for about 2 years
because we need compatibility with 2.1 and 2.2... What have you heard
about SD card support, do they allow to put .so files there?

This depends on the speed of 2.3 adaption, 2.2 adaption was really fast.

Hi BogDan,

Can you please explain what changes are on 2.3 that make it better for Qt support? Is Google now supporting Qt officially?

Thanks

Hi again,

I don't know about .so SD card, but what I can tell you now is WE WILL
HAVE a full feature qt on android 2.3 and latter. Also (i hope) I've
seen something very important for qt, now you can tell what shared
libs to be use from what package, this mean I'll see my dream come
true, fully shared qt libs on android !!!!

This week I'll try to create a new plugin for android 2.3. Also this
week, I'll try to finish OpenGL implementation, now it seems very easy
to do it.

I see a bright future for Qt on Android, hopefully Nokia will wake up and support Android officially.

Hi,

No, Google doesn't support Qt officially, but they did something witch
will make Qt porting extremely easy and safe. Check
android-ndk-r5/docs/STABLE-APIS.html,
android-ndk-r5/docs/IMPORT-MODULE.html, etc.. I'm very sure that
android platform will have a similar (or better :-P) with symbian or
maemo/meego (packaging, qtcreator integration, debug on
device/emulator, etc.).

Starting with 2.3 we can drop all dirty workarounds that I've made until now.

THANK YOU GOOGLE !!!

:) I don't think they will do it. Don't worry, everything will be ok,
what I can promise is that until the end of this year I'll do my best
to have full featured Qt on Android 2.3.

:) Thanks!

Until now I wasn't very sure that my work will be completed, now I'm very sure this will happen very soon.

Hi İsmail,

> This depends on the speed of 2.3 adaption, 2.2 adaption was really fast.

2.1 still has about the same share of users as 2.2 and 2.1 devices are
still being sold widely. Also many devices are stuck with 2.1 because
the makers didn't (and many won't) provide updates, or because devices
don't meet requirements of 2.2. And these devices will be in use for
few years from now. So the future is bright but it's just not here
yet. Maybe in a year 2.3 will be widespread enough so there willl be a
reason to ship a version built & optimized specially for 2.3+. Until
then it will be good only for testing, maybe for debugging (if they
provide multithread debugger).
