I just had a quick question. Does anyone know when android will be ported to java6, if ever? I know java5 went to it's End Of Life support a few months back...

Thanks!

You can use Java6 already, even tho the docs suggest otherwise. I've been using it exclusively since mid last year, no problems here...

Not correct. You are using JDK6 for building applications (and in 1.5
compatibility mode). He is more asking about using JDK6 for building
the PLATFORM. Totally different and very necessary.

The platform (source.android.com/download) needs java5 to compile because of @override incompatibilities. Seems kinda wierd, since java5 just hit EOL.

Thanks!

I saw a thread about some droid doclet thingy which supposedly fixed some of the issues, but I'm not sure of the status.

The doclet override check patch to support java 6 without breaking java 5 is still in review status on r.android.com (12074 if you're curious). Patch set 3 was uploaded on Nov 18th, which was the last real activity, and JBQ has verified it, but I believe wanted someone more familiar with that aspect of the platform to also review it.

My understanding is that there's nothing more to be done on our end at this point in time, it just needs more review when whoever the right person is can get to it. My guess is holiday/2.0/2.1 have meant no free time for reviews of these types of patches lately.

Thanks Chad.  I'll pull that diff in at some point (for now I managed to find a Java 1.5 for my system).
