Hi all, the one single biggest downside to my G1 is that I'm unable to
send a bluetooth contact. To most people I appreciate that this won't
be a big drawback, but as I'm on the road in the car a lot, I rely on
my bluetooth handsfree kit to make and receive calls.

I can receive fine and have paired the phone successfully, but unless
I can send a contact tot the kit via bluetooth, I cannot make outgoing
handsfree calls.

Is the inability to do this an Android restriction, or a phone
restriction.
In either case, does anyone know if it is in the roadmap to provide
this functionality?

Cheers

If my memory is ok, Android allows now only headset. We can't share data with BT.
If others people have answer...let know us :)

AFAIK this is true. Does anyone know if the limitation is in
software, or in hardware/firmware of the Bluetooth chipset in G1? If
data, A2DP, networking, etc. support is implemented in software, will
it work on the G1?

Android currently is able to send phonebook over HFP, but not over
OBEX (PBAP). It sounds like your carkit only supports PBAP.

This is only a software limitation. As we add more profiles they will
be made available to existing G1 owners via system update. This
includes A2DP and other profiles mentioned in this thread. Before you
ask, sorry I don't have a timeframe right now :)

Hi Nick, thanks for that response (and to the others who are also
discussing this).

Currently on the G1 there is no mechanism to send a contact, so the
carkit may well be only able to receive one type of contact, but G1
prevents me from even attempting to send anything.
I'll await the updates whenever they arrive, and won't push you for a
timescale ;-)

Cheers

This is the limitation in software!
It should be work fine if A2DP, AVRCP and networking is implemented in
software.
But a lot of works have to do in Android!

Amusingly, Android knows how to let my car handsfree kit browse the
phone's directory. My previous phone (Nokia E70, Symbian S60) didn't
allow that.

But yeah, better Bluetooth support is something many of us are looking
forward to.

Oh, and now after I sent that, I read what Nick Pelly said about
sending the phonebook over HFP. That'll teach me to reply to the
first message I see!

Thanks Nick :)
