As a first step towards downloading android source, I gave the
command
"sudo apt-get install git-core gnupg sun-java5-jdk flex bison gperf
libsdl-dev libesd0-dev libwxgtk2.6-dev build-essential zip curl
libncurses5-dev zlib1g-dev"
from my Ubuntu 9.04 box.
I get the following error message:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package git-core

Make sure your packages list is up-to-date. Go Applications>Add/Remove Packages, and let the list update itself, then close it. Close and re-open the terminal window (so that it picks up the new packages list) and then try downloading again.

you need to first update ubuntu and it will work, use this command in
the shell command prompt

sudo apt-get update

then try installing android again, java didnt work for me so just
delete that bit and everything else should work. donwload java
seperately
