Here there are all the downloadable code. Not whole Android is
released as open source, yet.

Only inside the Google campus. Google won't release the Android sources before phones ship, which won't be before the end of the year, at the earliest. Judging from the completeness of the SDK and statements from some OHA members (e.g. Samsung), might not be until next year...

Stone Mirror keeps saying this, though we've pointed out several times that it's untrue.

As of today, our most accurate information is still that devices will ship in the second half of 2008.  It is true, however, that the source won't be available until devices are available.

Dan:

Samsung said at MWC that they won't have an Android phone before next year: http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSL1169121920080211. This has been widely reported, it's not my opinion. Similarly, HTC says their Android phone will be out "near the end of the year": see http://www.infoworld.com/article/08/03/20/HTC-names-Google-phone-Dream_1.html. Could be either side of "the end of the year" and still be "near" to it.

Now, I did state that "based on the completeness of the SDK" (which is clearly a judgment I'm making) I think it's unlikely. I've had substantial experience shipping commercial operating systems, something I'd point out that Google doesn't have.

Let's be frank, Dan: the state of Android, looking at the SDK, is far from "feature complete", which puts in, in any standard software development terms, at pre-alpha. It's unstable, performance is sketchy (and seems to have worsened in the second SDK drop). It's got a long way to go before it's ready for prime time. So, yes, I'm stating an opinion, but it's an informed and educated one.

Google's own lawyer, Richard Whitt, made the apparent misstatement that Android phones might be out "this summer or fall", and was immediately corrected: see http://www.news.com/8301-13579_3-9901954-37.html. So yes, the party line is "second half of 2008", but it won't be summer, and it won't be fall, apparently, which takes us pretty much up to the end of the year.

So, what part of what I said is "untrue"? Do you want to provide a tighter clarification of what you mean? If not, I'll stand by my statements.

Two of your own citations contradict your statements.  (HTC never said and did not confirm the rumors surrounding their devices, and the date of second-half 2008 is indeed unchanged, as the articles state.)  As you claim to be an industry veteran, I would think you'd know better than to follow rumors so closely.

The most accurate information we have is still second half of 2008.  It's your right to choose to believe that's a public relations statement and not based (as it actually is) on our and our partners' schedules.  That does not, however, give your opinion any credibility.

Feel free to disbelieve me if you like, but I suspect that you are really just engaged in FUD.

Hello,

one question: Are the parameters network speed and latency considered in the GTalk communication?

Best regards

Hi Dan,

Are the library and DVM sources available for the OHA members? If a
company wants to make processors for the mobile handsets, do they get
the library and DVM sources if that company joins the OHA now?

Thanks,
KT

Hi Dan,

company wants to make processors for the mobile handsets, do they get
the library and DVM sources if that company joins the OHA now?

It's not completely clear whether the OHA can be "joined", and if it can, how one goes about doing so. Several folks reported, a few months ago, that they'd emailed asking for information and got no response whatsoever. I don't think there's been any update to that situation that I'm aware of...
