I have found out what is wrong.

From Jellybean onwards, you cannot view the logs of other apps. So AIDE
logcat is useless to use to see other apps logs.

The reason it still works on my phone, even though I have Jellybean on it,
apparently, is because I had AIDE installed when I was on ICS, and at that
stage I had permissions to view other apps logs. This apparently will
retain even after an upgrade to JellyBean.

So for use on both of them, I am writing a simple text file output class,
calling it MyLogger, just so I can put my own debug into a file on my
sdcard. At the moment I dont need to know all the major errors with the
app, it was more to debug stuff of my own making.

(Hope that makes sense I started to waffle at the end there!)
