Subject: Developer replies to comments

I was lucky enough to be invited to join the limited beta for developer
comments. It's a wonderful addition to the developer console. This feature
really makes the Play store much more useful for everyone, developers and
users alike.

There are some rules that have to be followed:

https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/bin/answer.py...

I hope this fantastic feature is rolled out to everyone soon.

Thanks Google! I really appreciate it!

You are lucky.  Did you find someone to reach out to and request this, or
did they find you (your app is easy to find, as you don't have to go far
down the list of top apps until you show up).

I really, really want this (as I suppose many of the other devs on this
list do to).

I have signed up for the new Market console, but haven't been invited in
for the beta for that either yet.

At any rate, congrats - you certainly qualify as a 'Top Developer', I am
just wondering how long it will take for this feature to filter its way
down to the rest of us "mere mortal' developers.

I'm not a "top developer." In order to qualify for that role, a developer
needs several top rated apps. I don't know how many is several and I don't
know what the rating level or downloads are required but I do know that we
don't qualify.

I think they are rolling out this much needed feature to the less than top
developer group now.

Is this part of  the "preview" for the new developer console I signed up
for the other day?

I wonder if they will ever unleash it to all developers  ever, for fear of
developer rage towards users...

I wanted that feature badly a few weeks ago, but now I think I don't care
that much replying to comments, as long as the ratings do
not go down.

I don't see why they wouldn't roll it out to all devs.

Any "rage against developers" is not Google's concern. You will only
experience that if you deal with your users in a negative manner. And if
you do then beware the pitchforks and torches.

Most comments I'd let lie, but when they are misconceptions about the app
or it's capabilities I'd love to be able to correct them. Things Like "1
star cause I can't switch off the sound" which has been in the app since
version 1.0. Fortunately I get very few of these, perhaps because I have an
in-app message feed that reminds people about usage, so it's probably only
1% of comments, but it's frustrating.

If you read that terms document that is attached to the developer replies
thing, it specifically states that we have to be nice or get spanked. I
think it is in everyone's best interest to be nice on the comment replies
thing. It's your public face to the consumer and any nastiness there will
reflect on your image as a developer. Nobody likes nasty customer service!

I've been using it for a couple of days now and it's been very satisfying
to reply to those one star comments.

The JOY of responding to a comment:

Kareena on Monday, August 13, 2012 at 10:45 HTC Evo 4G (supersonic) Version

Ads?? As soon as I installed, I started getting ads popping up on my phone.
It's a no-go for me!!
You replied on Monday, August 13, 2012 at 3:17 PM

If you're talking about ads appearing outside of our app, then you're
mistaken. We don't use an ad network that uses push technology. Too
invasive and annoying! If you're talking about banners inside our app, then
know that anyone, anytime, can opt out of banners for free. If you really
don't like to see ads, then by all means, just opt out.

This kind of merciless posting is against all principles of common
humanity (and probably the Geneva Convention).

The comment reads like it is from someone too hyperbolic to be paying
much attention anyway.  The majority of negative comments are from
people like that.  They're the ones who never figure out that the Menu
button works for apps too.  So much so that we might as well design the
apps (as sorta suggested on the recent developer blog) like iPhone ones
with all those things on the screen although the original design was for
external Menu, Home and Back buttons to save precious screen real
estate.  I've had the good fortune to have some customers retort to the
negative ads even calling the negative poster stupid.  We live it a
world of idiots with short attention spans.

The type of comment above also comes from someone who uses an "ad detector"
app.
A user who has not even seen push ads will nonetheless think your app has
them if some other app says so.

Got these recently.
"Ads? Why does this show up with airpush detector scan?"
"Unwanted Ads and Spam Sorry. Good App but discovered it was pushing
unwanted Ads and Spam to my phone."

I also got a rash of messages directly from customers.

Them: How come your app comes up in Airpush Detector?
Me: Because Airpush Detector is wrong.

While the latest App Critic App has admitted their mistake, I can expect
dozens more to crop up one by one. I've seen open source code for ad
detectors, and its only ten lines of code. Accuracy doesn't matter when you
want to feed the users' paranoia.

Maybe that fancy app push detector app is actually the source of the ads!
Certainly would be a good trick to pull. Blame everyone else! Very human
natured when you think about it.
