Putting the D-pad on the slide-out keyboard (a la Nokia N810) is an interesting move.
Right now, Android apps could assume that the pointing device was available in portrait mode. If the Cliq behaves like the G1 -- changing orientation on a keyboard slide -- then the pointing device will not be available in portrait mode, since it will be on the hidden keyboard. I wonder how many apps will have problems with that.
This assumes that the ring around the home key on the phone face is just a highlight and not a second directional indicator.

I wonder if the CLIQ has 256MB of ROM. Also seems to be lacking a
release date and Donut. And T-Mobile? Why can't Android get a device
on a real 3G network here. I was holding out for this event hoping my
next cell phone would get announced. If Andy Rubin wants to come
through on his 18 new phones this year. He sure has a lot of ground to
cover, and it looks like Motorola will provide one at most.

And don't forget to come on down to San Diegeo for the Motodev Summit
on Oct. 6th. Shoot, even if you don't like motorola, it's an excuse
to come down to sunny San Diego.

I don't understand the hardware buttons and I don't see them described
anywhere on the website.
The rightmost one is clearly back. The middle one is home (but what's the
coloured ring? the LED indicator?). The left button looks like it might be
for choosing applications, maybe, I don't know.
The thing I find most intriguing is that the hardware buttons for initiating
and terminating calls seem to have moved to the homescreen. This surely has
implications for replacement homescreens.

Interesting, an 18 bit display? I'm largely ignorant of phone hardware
characteristics (but am learning) and this seems like an unusual bit depth,
and isn't directly supported by skia (in cupcake anyway).

<irony>Does Moto offer free developer devices to test that out?</
irony>
The vast majority of apps will not receive any "adjustment", safe some
exceptions with deep pockets that can justify the expense. Not that I
couldn't swing it, but I just don't see how I would justify the
purchase of any of the devices. Already we should stack up on a
Samsung Galaxy to accommodate the wacked sensor inputs.
Note to manufacturers: Keep devices compatible if you have any intent
to leverage apps into moving units.

Shame on me I just checked that clip as well.
The lady explained that they "spent a ton of time with the developer
ecosystem to allow developers target Motorola devices". I suppose I
missed out on that (;->).
Can someone help me out what she's talking about?

I checked out Motodev Studio a few weeks back. I found a collection of
tools pulled together from other sources, repackaged and flying under
the Motorola banner.
But wait - NEW and IMPROVED. By submitting an email address one can
apply for "10 testing hours for FREE" over at DeviceAnywhere. Beets
the three hours you get directly on their web site, I guess. I have to
admit this reminds me of those CDs that AOL used to send around...
Well somebody's got to sell the Oxyclean, I guess.

Mark,
The D pad issue can be lifted off of the product demos. Who ever found
that from only looking at the video is pretty sharp... I typically
don't start putting in the effort until I have some hardware or at
least a serious emulator in my hands. Once the devices roll out I am
sure more issues will pop up. I might walk down to the T-Mobile store
one of the days and check one out, if they let me, just for laughs.
It's the principle that makes me wonder. It's lost on me how virtual
test environments are sufficient to support testing nowadays, where a
good rate of the apps rely on sensor inputs and where timing is key.
So, rhetorically asking, what's the approach, beyond that? That devs
buy all the shiny toys can't quite be the answer. Or can we factor
that into charging for apps (uhum).

I be interested for someone to report back on the actual useability of
the virtual test environment.
Particularly -
* opening, closing physical keyboard
* display using the touchscreen (including multi-touch) various
gestures, swiping etc
* switching through the various orientations
* compass, accelerometer pitch and roll - ie moving the phone around
in 3d
* camera, taking (real) pictures and video
* audio, both record and playback and voice dialing, search
* gps
* the proximity sensor and light sensors
I think they would need some very fancy robotics to accomodate a lot
of this, else a lot of emulation which sort of defeats the purpose.
Regards
PS I wonder if the CPU is pegged at 384mhz like the G1, hope there is
a better heat/power budget, so you can actually use 528mhz

I've tried DeviceAnywhere. If you want to do anything outlined in your
message, I would suggest to get a real device.
For example, the device is in their lab, it's not moving, so no actual
moving GPS location.
Sensors, gestures, etc., not much you can do virtually.
As for the CPU, what I heard is that it's at full 528MHz.
