Could i have some information about this restriction? There is some possibility that this restriction will change? I would like to participate but oops, it seems that i am Italian...
Can android live without my application? Could the world evolve without my idea? Probably yes, but let me try.
Hello! I'm Italian too... When I read the FAQ I was astonished!! Cuba, Iran, Myanmar.... and Quebec and Italy!! Is Italy a rogue state too? I didn't know! X(

ciao gianluca - need to go to the android main website, then developers, then competition and then FAQ. It says it is not open to residents of Italy because of local restrictions. So not only Italy is one of the least entrepreneur friendly countries of Europe we can't even participate in a competition because of the law... How bad can it possibly get!!! Could someone from Google throw some light onto the issue (I am sure you looked at the options - just curious to know what the local restriction is)?

Marius, you didn't answer istos's question. He already cited the FAQ, which just says "...because of local restrictions". He wanted to know exactly what the local restriction actually is.
Cheers, Rob

On slashdot I read something that makes sense. In Quebec all contests with prizes must be registered and pay some money to the state. I'm pretty much sure Italy has a similar law, at least for the registration part.

We would love to make the Developer Challenge open to everyone in the world, no matter where they are. Unfortunately, some jurisdictions, like Italy, place additional requirements on such events as the Developer Challenge that make it infeasible to open the Challenge to their residents.
We're sorry for the inconvenience!

yet again our government cripples us. Not only the research is poorly funded in Italy, handy laws prevent us from earning R&D grants or enrolling in open competitions. At the base of it, greed pulls the strings, always. No wonder most of us sail to new waters. Of course this won't stop me from integrating Android as extension to my software projects, but hey, if it weren't for the food, the ladies and the "quiet living" available here in Italy, I'd be out of this anti- meritocratic society in a jiffy.
The struggle to reach goals in Italy can be romantic, amplifying the echo of success, when it happens (way seldom). Point is that not everybody can live through this state of friction for an extended period of times, especially when competition skates on oily planes. I'm sure many brilliant minds had to settle for modesty when they could achieve way more.
One of these days I'll pack up all my olive oil and Parmesan cheese and head west.

Since we're already wildly off topic, for those interested who want something in English about just how bad the bureaucrats there can be, here's a story about trying to register welton.it and how long it took:
Seeing Italian is EU citizen. They can maybe temporarily relocated to a different part of EU (with full residential and working rights) while in this contest. ;-)
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Please let's do anything you can do to avoid this, please!! I'm italian too and this is incredible! Why only in Italy and few other countries? Seem to be very strange. Google defeated thoroughly by italian ministers? I don't believe it.
