Subject: iPhone SIM Card compatibility
Hello All,

I just recevied my G1 Dev Phone. I promptly took the sim from my AT&T
3G iPhone and placed it in my G1.

It appears that the iPhone SIM card is NOT compatible with the G1 and
will not allow your phone to interoperate with the data network.

If it's a Dev Phone (not a G1), it's not SIM-locked so you can use any
SIM in it.

Did you enter the proper APN for your network?

Do you have one?

Step to reproduce:

Unbox Dev G1.

Insert AT&T iPhone SIM card, boot

Register.

Registration fails and the data icon never shows up.

I've now tested with a T-Mo blackberry SIM card, data DOES work, but
registration still fails.

I've got my G1 working on AT&T , for your apn settings set name=
wap.cingular apn=wap.cingular, I left all other fields blank, my phone
now phone works fine on AT&T. The SIM card should be independant of
the iPhone.

I have a 1st gen iPhone I use for development and a 3G model for day-
to-day use. I put the SIM from the 1st gen iPhone in the Dev G1 and
adjusted the settings. Everything works fine except that I don't get
any 3G service on the G1. Just came back from running an errand
downtown (where the 3G signal is strong) and took both phones to try
out. Signal strength was high. iPhone showed 3G service while G1
showed only Edge.

Wondering if it's a setting thing, an AT&T thing, or something to do
with the SIM card coming from an Edge iPhone.

Any ideas?

it's simply due to the fact that AT&T 3G uses frequencies that are not
supported by the G1 hardware. So there is no way to get better than Edge on
AT&T networks.

Where is the menu for APN settings?  The one that you did not see.  I
cannot see it either.  Thanks.

Nevermind.  Found it.  For those who are "Menu challenged" like
myself, the breadcrumbs are:

Menu -> Settings -> Wireless Controls -> Mobile Networks -> Access
Point Names

Then you need to press 'Menu' and 'New APN' with the settings you can
find inside these threads for your carriers.  Then press 'Menu' again
and 'Save' and your mobile data plan of choice should pop up in your
top status bar after a few moments.
