I too am running running on Ubuntu version 9.10 as well.
Adding sdkman.force.http=true to ~/.android/androidtool.cfg allowed me
to retrieve the Sites, Packages, and Archives via the Android SDK and
AVD Manager.
However, nothing happens when I select one of the and click "Install
Selected" (button), nothing happens, when I select one of the items
from the list to install by clicking on "install selected".
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I had almost all the problems above using Ubuntu 9.10 on amd x64, but
I solved them and here is how:
First, I had to force http: echo "sdkman.force.http=true" > ~/.android/
androidtool.cfg
Then, create a tmp directory on the same level as the
android_sdk_linux/ directory: mkdir tmp && chmod a+rwx tmp
Lastly, change the ownership of the android_sdk_linux/ directory, to
me: chown -R me:users android_sdk_linux/
Sometimes nothing happens when I click on a button, except that it
gets marked and then if I hit enter, that will do it.

I have the exact same setup as Hans (Ubuntu 9.10 x64 (released)) and
the exact same problem. The components are listed in the SDK manager,
but when the "Install Selected" button is clicked, nothing happens.

So I've just managed to solve this problem on my Debian Lenny (5.0)
system.
Aside from needing to force HTTP instead of HTTPS, it turned out that
while I had the sun-java6-bin package installed, the alternatives
system was making /usr/bin/java point to the GNU Java bytecode
interpreter. Once I did a "sudo update-alternatives --config java" and
selected the Sun Java instead, everything started to work properly.

Ok this is weird... it seems that the "Android SDK and AVD Manager"
application recognises the Space bar, BUT NOT THE MOUSE, for certain
checkboxes, buttons etc.
So... you can enable the http option, and so on, by tabbing to the
control and pressing space.

before you launching the manager. I came across a similar problems
with Eclipse since upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 on my 64-bit machine, this
seems to fix most of the problems.

All work fine for me, the solution is to press the space keyboard,
the mouse didn't work correctly.
1) select by the mouse the action desired, but nothing do
2) press space with your keyboard
3) enjoy ;)

$ export GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=true
running that before opening the sdk worked perfect for me. I am on
ubuntu 9.10 and I was noticing the buttons in the sdk acted as if they
didnt respond to anything. I could then enable the force https http
thing, and updating works fine.

I am using Ubuntu Karmic Koala.
I created file ~/.android/androidtool.cfg and and
"sdkman.force.http=true "
Now I can download the Repository,But I still cannot download any
platform file or doc
CAN I DOWNLOAD THE PLATFORM ZIP FILE FROM A DIRECT LINK?

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit and ran into the same problem. I fixed
it by running the "android" tool with 64-bit java (sun jdk1.6.0_16) in
my path. I had 32-bit java prior to that.
