I have been planning to release the applications that I have developed
as paid applications and I do not have any plans to have a lite
versions of them.
However I am planning to take part in the android developer challenge
and I have noted that my application will be given to users frree of
cost for judging.
It has also been mentioned that I can set a time limit for expiry for
my application, for this purpose.
Is it advisable for me to set a certification timer, if yes how do i
go about doing this? I am also concerned that releasing this was may
cause some pirated versions of my application to be out in the web.
Can someone advice me as to what is the step I should go about with?
Thanks in advance,
R.Karthik

I'm not really sure patents are a sensible method of copy protection.
I think the original author is more concerned about people copying his
application verbatim, rather than people developing clones (where
patents _might_ help, but I'm not a lawyer).

Silly to patent an idea that will generate a few hundred or thousands
of dollars of the patent costs more... I don't know, but If I patent
something in the US, what prevents someone in China to create a
knockoff? A worldwide patent for an Android app sounds just silly...

Hi Karthikr, although piracy is difficult to defeat, ADC giving away
your app is not much more of a threat than pirates being able to buy
it off the market, except that Google is less likely to board your
ship with grappling hooks, dirks in teeth. Depending on what your app
does, you can make it expire after a month, but that can be hacked by
a sufficiently determined scoundrel; if you can store data on the web
(as with a social app), then it's easier to lock out freeloaders.

Several devs have told me they were waiting for the submission site to
release their app. According to the rules, any app on the market
after Aug 1 is eligible so is there any reason for a dev to hold their
app back? Other than trying to keep their project a secret?
Couldn't a dev put their app in the Market now and get feedback on it
while they wait for the submission site?

Yeah, I thought for sure there would be a slew of really great
applications hitting the Market on or shortly after August 1st... Oh
well. I hope everyone is just waiting for the submission site to open
and not that there are just few entries. Of course the fewer the
entries the better the chances of winning...

For the first 2 weeks, it was understandable. But good lord, theres no

open...
Maybe they are doing the Apple approach. Keep it all quite, then go
out with a bang. If that is the case, I would expect the site to open
around the 26th. That would give devs 5 days to submit, and the
public would hear the buzz and they would be able to d/l the apps only
6 days later. ...but I'm no marketing expert ...and then again, maybe
Google are just busy with other things.

I'm also searching for an answer to this question. We finished our app
today and looked for the submission form, only to not find one. We are
unsure if we should submit it to the Android Market or wait for the
form. Anyone from Google want to help us out?
Also, the fine print states that the apps cannot be updated once
submitted, but implies they should be available for free in the
Android Market. Does that mean that the Android Market will prevent
updating of the application during the competition?
It opened on the first and closed on the fifteenth. You missed it. That's why nobody else is asking about it. (Actually, there is a lot of info about the adc2 submissions process at http://is.gd/2s5JH- Check it out..)
