This discussion is rather old, but I found it right now...

I think Googles Maps and Directions API does not provide enough
information to build a navigator able to compete with the state of the
art products (which are mostly for free too). Yes, you can easily
obtain routes and geocodes, but the returned route is a polygon line
only. There is no more information about the context of the route. So
you might be able to build a rather simple navigation system, but it
would not blow you off the chair... It would be hmmm... OK...
