iPhone:
+-----------------------------------------------------+
C/C++ written applications
+-----------------------------------------------------+
Core / Extended / APIs & Libs
+-----------------------------------------------------+
Embedded Mac OS(FreeBSD kernel)
+-----------------------------------------------------+

Android:
+-----------------------------------------------------+
Java written applicaitons
+-----------------------------------------------------+
Android App Framework
+-----------------------------------------------------+
| Open libs | Built-in JVM |
+-----------------------------------------------------+
linux 2.6 Kernel
+-----------------------------------------------------+

Why Sun Java is not supported on iPhone? Will Java be supported later?
Gphone is openned by Android, which supports Java Application
Framework with a JVM built-in.

So which one is greater than the other one?

Iphone is Hardware+software, apple dont worry the compatibility
because they have only one device.
Android needs an Java application layer running on a VM because it
will be used in lot of devices.

As a developer, you can't really compare the two because in the first
place a few of us only know iPhone. Its a close environment and its
very hard to judge it.
