I think us active people on the board are guilty of misreading the
deadline (or the FAQ was stealthily changed). It sure looks highly
unlikely they will be announcing right on the fifth:

Read carefully:

* January 2, 2008: Start date for application submissions for
Android Developer Challenge I
* April 14, 2008: End date for application submissions
* Week of May 5, 2008: $25,000 awards are announced for 50 most
promising entries
* June 30, 2008: Deadline for 50 eligible entries to apply for
additional $275,000 and $100,000 awards
* Week of July 21, 2008: $275,000 and $100,000 awards are
announced
* Second half, 2008: Android Developer Challenge II launched

I think they've always said that they would announce the winners
around May 5th. Yeah, I doubt they'll meet that deadline, but I'm
hoping they do.

Yes,I agree.but I rememer that right? haha! Interesting things.
If that is truth,be relax. It is a normal things.
the judge time is too short for them after extending the
deadline, and also the second stage cann't move too far.

They certainly changed the FAQ, if you search for ADC Faq on google
and check the cache you will find:

January 2, 2008: Start date for application submissions for Android
Developer Challenge I
April 14, 2008: End date for application submissions
May 5, 2008: $25,000 awards are announced for 50 most promising
entries
June 30, 2008: Deadline for 50 eligible entries to apply for
additional $275,000 and $100,000 awards
July 21, 2008: $275,000 and $100,000 awards are announced
Second half, 2008: Android Developer Challenge II launched

Yea, I was hoping for 5th but was expecting 5th or around there. From
Terms and Conditions (http://code.google.com/android/adc-submit/
tandc.html):

h. NOTIFICATION: Participants who are chosen as potential
Qualifying Grant recipients will be notified by email on or about May
5, 2008.

This has always had the words "about May 5, 2008".

I think Muthu may have some friends at Google. He must know something
we don't. I'll find it highly suspicious if he wins! :)

LOL.

As a matter of fact even Google employees are suspicious about me. That proves really how well I research the net and find out information.

OK, here the reason, the May 5 date stands:

1. The already extended the challenge deadline.
2. The waiting period is kinda nervous for all including developers.
3. Once winners are announced, work can move on like introducing new SDK's and so on.

Given all this, I made a prediction that Google will be working hard to meet the May 5 date thereby making everyone happy.

Now is this too hard to infer or am I going insane?

Good luck to each and every one of 1788 submissions. Google will do no evil. Relax.

I hope you are right. I still don't think they'll make the deadline
though, even with your good reasons. I simply don't believe that they
can process 1700+ applications by May 5th. Anyway, we'll see.

The change in the faq would indicate to me that they expect that they
probably miss the may 5 deadline with a few days, in my opinion not a
suprise given the huge number of applications that needs to be judged.

Hmm.. If May 5 is the date, then by this Friday (May 2) all of the applications must have been hit thoroughly. If people are still complaining about server hits not happening still by sat/sun, then we can be sure results are not going to happen May 5.

Good point. If May 5 skips, then probably the results will be only on May 9.

If our application makes the qualifier, we will need to staff up with
folks who exhibited the coding elements we need in round 1. Depending
on SDK maturity, and how Google is steering it, we may need a bit more
time for phase two.

As an aside, java may be the best/only language to provide the power
and safety needed to let folks work in this space that is much less
constrained than what Apple is offering. For one coming from Fortran,
AWK and some C, learning Java was/is... a significant time constant,
but I am starting to understand why it was choosen here in a first
hand kind of way.

They'll be late.

1) The original deadline was pushed out a month and a half. You think
4 business days is going to phase them?
2) The waiting period is nervous for the people who are out of the
loop and put all the work in. That's us. Nobody else is nervous.
3) They could introduce a new SDK tomorrow. I think they sat on the
#15 for a while, actually, and I'm surprised they didn't toss out a
new one after the contest ended.

Its like this. The judging will take as long as it takes. I think
they'd rather keep us hanging than not really do the job of reviewing
that is needed. I'd personally prefer they do that.

I do, however, wish they'd tell the people that are out that they're
already out. You know? I could have my pity party this weekend (if I
were out ;).

I thought I'd bump this up because a lot of the new posts are still
quoting May 5th as the announcement date.

Since they are still testing/judging this weekend I think that it is
even more unlikely that they will be announcing in the next couple
days.

On the other hand, they only have 100 applications to judge. So it is
plausible that the announcement of the 50 winners happens on May 5th
but would not be surprissed if it happends on the 6th or 7th.

Actually, if I recall correctly the judges are due to have their scores on the 100 back to us by Wednesday.  Then we have to tabulate the scores, and I think the legal department has to finish their eligibility review (to make sure no submitters are known terrorists, and that sort of thing. ;)

So I don't think we'll be able to announce anything before Wednesday.  But as far as I know we are still on track to announce sometime next week.

I don't think being a non-terrorist was in the TOS.

I really am a known terrorist so please don't throw mine out because
the Government can claim anyone a terrorist now days. Seriously.

I'm sure that was a joke, even though it didn't come out well.

The harassment that many governments carry out in the name of terrorists is something that cannot be explained, unless experienced.

Travis has a point there, but must admit the post missed the eloquence of putting it across nicely. May be that's the point ;)

And I don't know how the terrorism check can be one in 2 days max,
whereas the FBI takes 2 years to do the same for green card process.

It depends on who's checking and for what. If the government checks it will take 2 yrs for Green card. Maybe indefinitely for H1B.

If you are a citizen, then it might be a little quicker etc., One thing for sure, its a complete pain in the butt to be an alien in any country.

Why not do the background check for the 100 individuals/teams in
parallel while the judges decide who the top 50 are ?
That might save some time ...
Well, that's just an engineer's optimization and I am not aware of the
practical challenges there :)

Cheers,
Shooter.
