how about building a Navigation Application that uses maps and driving
directions from GoogleMaps. I mean since Goolge already provides all
the Map-Information, the *only* thing that has to be created, is an
audio output that tells you to turn left or right depending on the
current location.
I know there are already a lot commercial Navigation Systems out
there. But using the maps from Google would have some benefits:
+ no need of buying different Map-Packs for each country
+ up-to-date maps, no annual update needed
+ traffic is available in GoogleMaps too
+ no need of big SD-Cards
+ ...
What do you think about this idea?
Would it be possible, or is this only something for the Google Maps
Team?
Since I do not have enough free time to build such an application, it
would be nice if someone picks up the idea.
I was thinking the same thing. You would need a docking station so that it would be in easy view for the driver and hooked to the stereo for audible directions. It would have to be able to handle calls at the same time (either via bluetooth headset or speaker phone).
I've add this to the ideas list on our site...

Hmmm...this is nice. In additional you can then add a "voice command
feature". If Im not wrong android has a speech recognition class that
one can take advantage. Through this feature the driver wont need to
touch his phone to request for some services or information, but
instead just relay the programmed voice command. It would add a good
user experience for the driver.

Can anyone confirm if Text to Speech (TTS) is bundled with the Android
JVM? I believe the Java Speech classes support this and are available
in the J2SE but not in J2ME? Does the Android JVM support Speech
classes? These classes are more than speech recognition only. If
they are absent then I can only think that a server will need to
provide the TTS service requiring connectivity and data costs.

This discussion is rather old, but I found it right now...
I think Googles Maps and Directions API does not provide enough
information to build a navigator able to compete with the state of the
art products (which are mostly for free too). Yes, you can easily
obtain routes and geocodes, but the returned route is a polygon line
only. There is no more information about the context of the route. So
you might be able to build a rather simple navigation system, but it
would not blow you off the chair... It would be hmmm... OK...

I use Google Maps for about a year now, and to be honest, it is an
awful map application. Even in fast wifi coverage, maps are noticeably
slow to load, and if you only have GPRS connection, the car drives
through the map segment faster than the segment loads. Not to mention
of course rapid battery depletion due to all radios being ON at the
same time. I dare say local storage for maps is a must.
there is one more problem which i could think of is that the app.
would require to get the current location of the user, which would be
based on the tower of the service provider of the GSM network thus not
making it accurate.
