On the one hand, this isn't likely to be a build issue (especially as
you got to the point where you had WiFi at all, which means that the
WiFi firmware was loaded properly).
On the other hand, I assume that the retail build works fine on your
device (what kind of device is it?), and the fact that the AOSP build
wouldn't work is strange as they're supposed to be identical in such
areas.
You might get better luck grabbing a log, and asking on android-platform.
