Subject: Bounce Rate vs. % Exit
Here's my read on Bounce Rate and % Exit stats for a given page on my
site:
Bounce Rate indicates the percent of viewers of that page that landed
on the page and left without visiting any other pages.  % Exit is the
percent of viewers of that page that visited no other pages on the
site *after* that page, but they may have visited other pages before
visiting that page.

Now, if my definitions are correct, % Exit should be a superset of
Bounce Rate so to speak.  That is, % Exit should contain all the
Bounce Rate pageviews (since they are exiting too), *plus* all the
pageviews from people who visited other pages earlier in their
session.

But this doesn't appear to be the case, as my % Exits are lower than
my Bounce Rates for every page in the site.  Could someone explain
what I'm missing?  Thanks!

Mike

Hi Mike - you're right in that Bounce % is a subset of Exit %.
Remember though that when you're measuring Exit %, it's a percentage
of all the visitors to that page who exit, whereas Bounce is only a
percentage of entries, so the baseline totals are very different.

Say I have 10 visits to a page, 4 of which are entries. 6 people exit,
including all 4 of the people who landed on that page. My bounce rate
would then be 100% , but my overall Exit is still only at 60% because
most of the visitors from other pages stayed on site. Hope I
understood your question - though I'm not sure this answer helped any!
