Subject: Funnel visualization -understanding path entrence
Hi,
I have made a test trying to understand how the funnel visualization
works.

I have created a profile including my ip only and set up
a 2step funnel >

1st step (required) = /contact.php
Goal = /thankyou.php

The test i did was as follow:
Entrance to site from home page  = /
Go to contact page = /contact.php
Complete form = /thankyou.php

Clicked Back to = /contact.php
Complete form for the 2nd time = /thankyou.php

Close browser

later on i see in my funnel visualization form
that there is only one entrance to the funnel coming from "/".

How come  if i clicked back and completed the goal again?
Shouldn't i see 2 entrances?
1 from home page
1 from Contact page?

Hi,

You can have, at most, one conversion for each goal per session. Even
though you hit /thankyou.php twice, because this was during the same
session, it only counts as a single conversion. Also, if you had come
to the site via /contact.php, this would register as a count for the
(entrance) record for the entry into your goal at the Contact page
step.

Hi Jeremy and thank you for your help.

One thing still isn't clear to me,
that is which page does analytics count as the entrance to the
funnel,
is it the page we first landed during the session the goal was reached
at?
or is it the page before entering the 1st step in the funnel?

The test i did was as follow:
Entrance to site from home page  = /
Go to contact page = /contact.php
Complete form = /thankyou.php

and the entrance on the funnel visualization showed:
"/"

Thanks

Your question is since a conversion is only counted once, which
conversion is it counting (the first one or the last one). From your
example it looks like the 1st one since the "Came From" page was / and
not /contact.php

FYI for anyone else who's reading this: the Goal Conversion and Funnel
Visualization reports are counting the "Unique Views" for the Goal
page (and steps) and not the total Pageviews.

Hi ShoreTel,

Well i got it. Its per session.

But yet, how should i understand the "Came from" logic?

Here is again my test:
Entrance to site from home page  = /
Go to contact page = /contact.php
Complete form = /thankyou.php

1. When the goal is made of one page only (thankyou), i see the "came
from" as = /contact.php
2. When the goal is a 2 step funnel (contact + thankyou) i see the
"came from" as = /

What is the logic behind this?

Each step you define for your funnel gets it's own box. Each box
represents the page you defined for that step. Since your "two step"
example has "contact.php" as the first step, the"Came From" page for
that step shows "/" because that's the page the visitor (you) came
from to get to that step.

In a three step funnel, you will see a "Came From" box next to both
Steps 1 and 2, showing how people arrived at each step (page) you
defined.

Hi ShoreTel,
Thanks.

I've experimented, and it appears that the entrance to the funnel
is the last page visited before hitting the page which defined as a
first step on the funnel.

It still don't explain how come i get the "entrance" indication
on some scenarios, "entrance" as i understand it means that
users has started the funnel when the first step in the funnel
was their landing page.

That isn't possible in my case..but...i'm giving up for now.

Thanks again.

If they sit on your page for more than 30 minutes and THEN they click
to the first step of your funnel. That is also considered an
(entrance).
