This coming saturday we'll be having a BarCamp on 'Data
Visualization', hosted at Mediamatic in Amsterdam.
Details at http://www.mediamatic.net/page/207517/en
Basic idea: BarCamps are cheap and cheerful self-organizing
conferences where attendees are encouraged to participate actively -
short talks, demos, collaborative hacking or sharing ideas, use cases,
tools and learning tips in small breakout groups. Last year we did
something like this on Augmented Reality, and it was pretty fun, talks
on everything from Semantic markup to 3d on smartphones (and on life
as a data-using fireman :). This year we shifted focus a bit towards
data viz, which is a bit broader and more inclusive. As before we try
to bring together people with complementary backgrounds in a friendly
informal environment...
Personally I think the future of data visualization is in the Web
browser, with UI driven by Javascript, so I'd love to see some folks
from amsterdam-js come along and share some of what they've learned
and are working on. In particular we hope the event will help people
with complementary skills (coding, interfaces, stats, analytic...)
learn from each other, since the possibilities in this area are
growing so fast it can be hard to keep up. If you'd like to give e.g.
a lightning talk or demo, please let me and my cc:'d friends know.
Remember that things you take for granted as Javascript hackers
(random e.g., using Processing.js, Google Viz APIs / widgets, WebGL
libraries or Protovis) could be a revelation to people with other
backgrounds.
Hope to see some of you on saturday,
cheers,
Dan
ps. we have a Bagel-sponsorship opportunity, if your company is interested...
