Hi,

We'd like your advice and opinions on how we should go about making
AMEE data Open Source.

We've already committed to making the data "Creative Commons" where we
can.

We also represent other types of copyright data (e.g. Crown Copyright)
via the API.

What licensing do you think would work best for the *data* for the
project (note there is a separate discussion thread for the code).

Secondly, what would be the best mechanisms for us make the data
available?

The API itself is there, is accessible to anyone, and is the best way
to access it.

One person has commented that they want a downloadable CSV- this would
require us/someone to write some code to generate it dynamically - the
AMEE data is changing on a continuous basis.

We need to combine an open+restricted approach to managing the data
and algorithms. We can't allow people to, for example, edit the Defra
data - it is what it is. We've left the "discussion" tab open to all
on the methodology wiki so that anyone can comment or argue about its
validity, or present alternative methods. This is deliberately to
encourage debate about the data and methodologies themselves.

Are there other useful tools we should be using? How do you envisage
people/orgs contributing data to the project? Any tips on how we
manage this process so it can scale? Right now we have to moderate any
incoming data feeds and we can scale this process. However, there is a
different dynamic to the project from Nupedia/wikipedia.

There are lots of examples out there and we'd like your thoughts on
what would work best for AMEE.

Best
Gavin

Hi!

We've been working on a licence for databases that you might find
useful for this project. The project, for the moment, is known as the
Open Data Commons. The links to the two licences are available here:

http://www.opencontentlawyer.com/open-data/

The main database licene, the Open Data Commons Database Licence (or
ODC-DBL) separates out the data from the database so that you can have
multiple rights governing the actual contents.

The licence is still in the drafting stage, so your comments would be
most welcome.

Warm regards,

~Jordan
