Dear ITLC Members -- With the help of Mary Beth who is now on the
AMATYC Executive Board as Secretary, I am transitioning into the ITLC
Chair. Mary Beth will be a hard act to follow! Luckily she is
providing all kinds of files, documentation and advice for me. Thank
you, Mary Beth! Here’s the latest, as of the AMATYC "Spring Planning
and Orientation" on January 13-15.
(1) A few days are left to meet the February 1 deadline for proposals
for the 2012 AMATYC conference in Jacksonville, Florida, October 31 -
November 3, 2012. Please consider making a proposal to speak or
preside or encourage your colleagues to submit a proposal.
(2) The “Ignite Event” motion was passed and approved by the Executive
Board. Yay! It will be Friday night. Ignite events (http://
igniteshow.com) are fast-paced and fun. Each presenter prepares 20
slides which are automatically advanced every 15 seconds. We’ll have
two sets of about 10 presentations each, separated by a break for
socializing. There will be a no-host bar and perhaps food or a
concessions stand for purchasing food. A video of the presentations is
posted on the Ignite website. I will try to get a wide-spread email to
inform all AMATYC members and encourage them to particpate. The Ignite
event allows us to be more spontaneous, and could provide a forum for
someone reluctant to speak for 50 minutes but for only 5 minutes
they’re ready and willing!
(3) Now the work begins. Ask your colleagues to present at the Ignite
event. Be a presenter, yourself! Please email me with your Ignite
presentation topic and a short description. I will collect these and
later we, as a committee, will decide who to invite.
(4) First order of priority for the Ignite event: We need a
videographer and a video camera (AMATYC will provide the room, a
projector and screen). It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Some
Ignite events have been recorded with a cell phone camera! Please let
me know if (a) you have a video camera you can bring to Jacksonville
and (b) if you’re willing to be our videographer.
(5) Speaking of presentations, the ITLC is actively recruiting
speakers for its webinars, as you know. A small $100-200 stipend is
available. Please email me with your suggestions. I would be happy to
contact the person or you may. After a person agrees to participate
and submits a title and description, the webinar presenters will be
selected by the ITLC. Maria Andersen will train and schedule the
presenter.
I’ve got a possibility: James Tanton runs a math blog and has created
a series of videos where he intuitively derives geometry formulas, and
more. Go to
http://www.jamestanton.com/?p=947 for more info. Or,
perhaps he could present “How to teach quadratics with ease,
understanding, and no memorization!” Or whatever else he’s interested
in? Let me know if this looks like a possibility.
(6) Our committee meeting in Jacksonville will have to be early Friday
morning. That will free up Friday night to prepare and setup for the
Ignite event. So be warned. Join the ITLC meeting in Jacksonville
bright and early 7:30-8:50am on Friday morning!
(7) Please pay a visit to our site at
https://sites.google.com/site/amatycitlc/
any time for further resources. Click on "Discussion Group" to start a
new discussion. I’m also open to any suggestions to add to the site,
or input from you about the committee, in general.
(8) Now that I’m ITLC Chair, the West needs a rep. We also need
regional reps from the Northwest and Mid-Atlantic. Please let me know
if you'd be willing to be a regional rep from one of these areas and
serve on the ITLC Executive Board.
Thanks for reading this extra-long message. I look forward to the
Ignite Event in Jacksonville, our webinars, and all the other
discussions and activities we are well-known (even famous) for! --
Sincerely, Your New Chair, Fred Feldon
