This Monday, April 23rd, I will be presenting a web-conference through COTC (see below) at 1:00 pm PST. I have asked for the web presentation to be archived. If you would like to listen in and/or participate, then please feel free to do so using the contact information given below. The subject of my presentation is a two year project over which I have “slaved” called MyMathText. I hope that you might be able to join me for this presentation.

Sincerely,
Rob Knight

Driving Awareness, Adoptions, and Affordability

All -- I am resending this message because I typed Sharyn's email incorrectly. It is now correct in the 3rd line below. Also I want to add a note that we are within whispering distance of our goal of 1200 members in this community. If you know educators or others interested in open textbooks, please invite them to join. -- Regards, Jacky Hood, COT Co-Director, ODG Director

The College Open Textbooks Collaborative holds its annual meeting in conjunction with the quarterly face-to-face and remote meeting of the Open Doors Group on Monday April 23 in San Jose, CA.

To attend this meeting in person or remotely, send a message to sharyn.fi...@happyabout.info
There is no cost but registration is required.

See Agenda for details.

Websites for all COT Collaborative members can be reached from
http://www.collegeopentextbooks.org/about-us/members-of-cot

This is a joint meeting with our umbrella organization Open Doors Group http://opendoorsgroup.org

Highlights from the draft report to The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation for the August 2011-May 2012 grant will be presented and discussed. Communities of practice, bound open textbooks, strategic partners, peer reviews, substantial growth in our online community, and a ported website are among the accomplishments.

LeBaron Woodyard of the California Community College Chancellor's Office will speak on California initiatives. Robin Donaldson and David Nelson will do the same for Florida. Our emcee Mitchell Levy will summarize many other state/provincial OER activities.

Our featured presenter for the final hour is Rob Knight, tenured mathematics professor at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose. The presentation is MyMathText: A New Learning Management System (LMS)  Tool that Enables Teachers to Create Their Own Digital Textbooks (and use any OER including Open Source Textbooks).

Rob started his career teaching high school mathematics then completed medical school. In a tribute to its distinguished alumnus, Adelphi University writes: "For nearly 20 years, Dr. Knight maintained a private surgical practice in Northern California, occasionally traveling to Los Angeles and Mexico to work with children suffering from foot deformities. In 1995, Robert Knight sold his medical practice and returned to the classroom. Just named College Teacher of the Year by the Silicon Valley Mathematics Association, Rob maintains that digital technology can be a teacher’s greatest ally." Rob provided several peer reviews for College Open Textbooks.

We will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of Collaborative member Benetech Bookshare. In the words of Palo Alto Weekly reporter Chris Kenrick: "Bookshare -- one of Benetech's three major initiatives...enables 190,000 disabled subscribers to access the print or audio texts of more than 140,000 books on any number of electronic devices..In its early days, Bookshare's main suppliers were visually impaired adults who scanned and shared bestsellers, mysteries, and (more)... the non-profit (then) ventured into education -- overcoming the skepticism of textbook publishers -- after hearing repeatedly stories about the needs of students with disabilities. Today, students comprise the vast majority of Bookshare subscribers."
