Hi All,
The administrators at my district are wanting to change the description of our online courses to hybrid if they have proctored exams. I’m not sure this is a good idea because all the instruction is done online and if a student can’t come to campus to take and exam arrangements can be made to have the exam proctored somewhere else. All this started because of a misunderstanding but may be out of my control.
It would be great to hear from other instructors how your courses are labeled if proctored exams are required. Also what are the pros and cons of labeling an online course as hybrid?
Thanks!

At my institution the distinction between online and hybrid has to do with how the instruction is delivered. Online courses have all instruction delivered online (and some have required in-person midterms and/or finals); hybrid courses have some of the instruction in-person and some of the instruction online.
Hope that helps,
Denise

I agree with Denise. At my college, a hybrid class usually means that it is one the schedule to meet face-to-face one or two times each week, with the remainder of work being done on line.
For example, most of our 3 credit-hour hybrid classes are scheduled to meet 2 hours each week (say on Monday and Wednesday) with the 3rd hour of instruction to be online.
We do have a hybrid speech class which I believe meets monthly for students to do their public speaking with an audience, while completing the rest of the instruction online.
What your administration is proposing does not seem to me to be a hybrid course.
In our Division of Arts and Sciences, we are required to give proctored evaluations for our online (web) classes. We do have a testing center and a process for students to get approved proctors if they live out of our service region.

Hybrid -- f2f and online instructions, and they meet once a week in classroom.
Online -- instruction is all online, with proctored exams wherever they are.

I actually had to “fight” with my new dean over this… a student had complained that I was requiring proctored testing for an online course. “If it’s online, it should be fully online, including the tests; if you have proctored tests, you should call it hybrid,” is what my dean had claimed. Thankfully I was able to change her mind, in no small part by showing her the drafted statements by AMATYC on proctored testing for online courses.
Here, a hybrid course specifically means that part of the seat time is moved online. I run a 4-credit course in hybrid format, where we meet 2.5 hours one night per week (instead of 4 hours per week) and most of the lecturing is moved online, as webcam recordings.
Good luck,

Leaving out ill-informed administrators, why can'dt this be done at all schools?

I want to thank everyone who responded. I forwarded the emails onto my dean and VPI with no response except from my dean who said that nothing could be done. I then contacted the VPI directly and had a discussion about the issue of why it is important to keep the online classes listed as online and mentioned the responses I got from this group. I was also able to convince him that my classes are following the DEAC recommendations and it is ok to have proctored exams and still be an online class. Then a miracle occurred and my classes, at least for Fall, are back to the label of Online. The summer classes are listed as Hybrid so it will be interesting to see what happens to enrollment. Starting next semester we will have a new VPI and possibly a new dean as well so who knows what will happen then.
Thanks again, this group is awesome!

A short time ago someone emailed the list server with the name of a freeware video editing product that could be used after creating a video using Jing. Unfortunately, I cannot find that email. Does anyone remember the name of that free video editing software? I would really appreciate you sending me the name.
Thank you,
