Good morning

Some colleagues and I use Tablet PCs in teaching. We present the material in class using Journal so that we can post the notes online after class.  We also use Maple, LaTeX and MS Office regularly. Our computers are getting old and the IT director asked us if we have recommendations for new tablets.  I thought I would ask this group for advice. We would need something that we can write on and is powerful enough to run Maple.  The IT people would like something that is reliable but inexpensive. I think a Mac would be acceptable, but a PC would be preferable.

Any advice you can give would be great!

And to make this message more relevant to the mission of the committee, let me say that I have been using a tablet in teaching for about 5 years now, primarily in college algebra type classes. If any of you are interested in getting started using a Tablet, or want to discuss how to use a Tablet to encourage active learning, just send me a message. This summer we're going to try to figure out how to incorporate them in our distance learning classes. That'll be interesting!

I covet Fred Felton’s Motion Computing J 3500 tablet (Google it)…(Forgive me Father, for I have sinned!!). The newer versions now come with Android technology. And best of all…it plays Flash!

I wanna comment on this thread, but I haven't been at a computer to get all my information together.

I do want to ask Rob about the Android flash interface. Last time I tried to access MathXL with the android OS I was able to get all the way into the homework/quiz section but I could not get a keyboard so I could enter an answer. Has that issue been fixed?

I don’t know why a keyboard isn’t coming up. It may be more of a MathXL problem than an Android problem.

Yes, Rob. I do love it. Shemsi, I've been using a Motion Computing for over 3 years now. It's expensive but it's the best Tablet PC (full computer, not a low-cost input and not a low-cost entertainment device but a full-fledged working computer) that uses Microsoft Journal and OneNote, etc. Let me know if you have any questions about it. Prices start at around $2000.  --  Fred
