Show work

Hello everyone!
Last summer we had a discussion about "collecting" work for online students.
Some of us had students hand in notebooks at the final, some had students upload written work at various times in the semester and others utilized the "show work" feature in MyMathLab or MathXL.

Since technology moves quickly I am sure things have evolved over the past 6 months since we last discussed this issue.

As I am sure many of us agree the goal of mathematics is not simply getting the right answer. How are you "collecting" written work from your students for your online courses? If you give completely online tests/quizzes do you require your students to submit written work? If so, what methods are you using to collect the work?

Hi,

In my college algebra course online I  require students to turn in a a chapter assignment after the end of each chapter. I give them about 10 to 15 questions and ask them to show work for full credit. Students can turn in the assignment via any electronic mean, they can type in the answers and send it to me as a Word document or hand write it, scan their paper and send it to me as an image file or pdf file. Using this approach, I am not able to provide students with immediate feedback other than posting the answers online after the due date. I do  ask students to keep a copy of their original work so they can compare with the posted solution.

I'm having students in my online classes (statistics and college algebra) use MyMathLab's Show Work option for problems on their four take-home tests this semester.   I don't require that they show their work, but if they do, I will review any incorrect answers and possibly award partial credit.    I was concerned that it would be very time-consuming because each student gets different questions, but grading was very easy because I focused on the questions that were marked incorrect.  I made corrections using red type.   On the first take-home test, most students showed their work.

 

I did also look at some of the work for the correct answers to make sure that students were on the right track.  I wouldn't reduce someone's score if the work were wrong but the answer were correct, but I would contact the student to make sure that he/she understood the steps.

 

This is a huge improvement over previous semesters where I would have students complete their take-home tests by hand, scan them, and upload their pdfs to CourseCompass.  Then I would download the pdfs, import them into Windows Journal, grade them, and upload them back to CourseCompass.    That was incredibly time-consuming, to say the least.

 

I also require students to show their work on the proctored midterm and final exams.

I require my online students to download worksheets for each section and complete them.  They can either hand-carry them to me (as many of my online students are on campus, too) or scan and email them to me by the time they take their test.  Once the test date has passed, I post answer keys for the worksheets and test.  All tests are proctored, paper and pencil, and they are required to locate the proctor.  The proctor then scans and emails and sends me the original.

The University of Wisconsin Colleges have 13 campuses spread across the state.  About half of the students who are taking classes online are associated with one of those campuses, which means that for courses requiring proctors, there quite a few students who must locate an appropriate proctor in their community who is not associated with the University of Wisconsin Colleges.  Here are the guidelines we use for students needing to locate proctors.  In general it is a professional who holds an advanced degree.

Criteria for Designated Proctors

Any individual who meets one of the following criteria, and is not a relative, can proctor exams for UW Colleges Online courses:

 

·         University or college faculty member

·         K-12 teacher

·         School administrator, school psychologist, or other school official

·         Professional engineer or architect

·         Professional librarian

·         Medical doctor or dentist

·         Certified public accountant (CPA)

·         Lawyer, or a police officer in an administrative position

·         Military officer

·         Pastor, priest, or rabbi

·         Official at an embassy or consulate

·         UWC IT Support Person
