Hi everyone, Forgive me if my question has been answered before, but how is your two-year college addressing accessibility in face to face as well as online? We are moving to become more accessible and in doing so, math and science seem to be the most challenging. Many of the textbook publishers provide good multimedia resources, but they are not accessible. We have developed a checklist to establish a baseline for the college as we assess where we are in our ability to provide instruction that is accessible. What and how are you moving in this direction?

Linda and all, Thank you for your quick replies. A short definition for accessibility is accommodating those with disabilities - mental, emotional, physical. We have always have some students with physical disabilities such as visual or hearing impairment, but we are seeing growing numbers of students who have learning disabilities that require additional assistance to learn. In 2006 the State of North Carolina enacted Senate Bill 866, AN ACT TO MAKE CHANGES TO THE PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES PROTECTION ACT. It is available online:http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/Sessions/2001/Bills/Senate/HTML/S866v6.html It requires all educational institutions, not just k-12, to adjust their instruction and programs to be "accessible". For example, if you create a PowerPoint for your class as a resource, it needs to have a transcript that can be read by a screen reader for blind students, since their reading software can't read the PowerPoint slides. If you use an animation to support a concept or in conceptual development, you must provide a script of other means of description so a blind student understands what is taking place. If you use sounds to describe or color to discriminate, you need to find an additional way to provide the information for the hearing impaired or color-blind student.
To make our instruction, across the college, more accessible we began looking at how other schools addressed accessibility issues. Valencia Community College in CA had a well-developed plan, so we used them as a benchmark, studied their checklist and a few others and designed what we thought we could use as a baseline. We presented the checklist to the division Deans and next we will share with the faculty for input. I'll be more than happy to give you what we have as soon as we have final approval on the list.
But having a list is easy...it's finding a way to meet the challenges that is hard. If you all have had experience meeting the challenges, I would love to learn what you did. As I mentioned before, we anticipate some obstacles since we use publisher products that are not necessarily accessible, even though they may say they are.

question of captioning of math videos on my blog. It has come up not
only here, but with many of the participants in our 2011 Math &
Technology Workshop from the states of NC and CA.

Maria, Thank you for putting your thoughts and experiences to paper. I will share this with my group as we struggle with how to comply in North Carolina. It will be interesting, as you suggest, to watch what happens when the law is applied and tested. I hope we can meet the needs of all students and can come to a reasonable interpretation. I believe that many of the things we do to meet accessibility standards benefits all students and helps instructors to become more reflective about how they teach. It's just finding a balance.
