Dear ITLC Members -- In the last three months I've discovered and
reviewed the work of three colleagues each of whom might produce a
great webinar for AMATYC. These are not your normal AMATYC members
giving webinars to each other. I have gone a little bit "outside the
box." Let me know what you think. If you approve I will follow up with
Maria Andersen to schedule. Thanks! -- Fred Feldon

(1) KATHY SCHROCK is a school district Director of Technology and an
adjunct education professor. Not a math background, I know. But in
January I watched her EdWeb presentation, "Resources for Online Tools
and Strategies to Support Instruction." I contacted her and asked if
she could custom-tailor the presentation to include our unique
requirements for discipline-specific notation. That is, how can math
students and instructors communicate mathematically to each other
online? She said yes, she would do this for us! Her website is
http://kathyschrock.net and her EdWeb presentation is archived at
http://edwebnet.blogspot.com/2012/01/resources-for-online-tools-and.html.

(2) DAN SUTTIN is a retired high school mathematics instructor but
tutors college students at San Antonio College in Texas. His specialty
is construction of 3D polyhedra models. For years he has spent 40
hours per week or more building his models. They include a giant
Sierpinski Tetrahedron you can walk into! For online photos go to
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dan_suttin and visit his Facebook pages
at http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Octa-Tetra-Museum/250284981705042?sk=photos
and http://www.facebook.com/pages/Whats-Next/254239217975019?sk=photos.
I asked if during the webinar he could showcase his work and
experience, and offer advice to math professors if they wanted to
encourage their students to create works similiar to his.

(3) JAMES TANTON received his PhD in math from Princeton in 1994. Ten
years later he switched from research mathematician to full-time high
school teacher and adjunct professor at Northeastern University. His
goal is to inspire the teaching of mathematics using just a few basic
ideas and common sense, "joyfully, with ease and not memorizing a
thing!" I recently watched his "Geometry Formulas Explained" series of
videos. It's a wonderful approach we should all consider. Go to his
web page at www.jamestanton.com for more info, and watch one of his
"Geometry Formulas Explained videos at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y27xb0dgt3w.

Let me know what you think, if any or if all three of these folks
would be appropriate for our webinar series. -- Fred Feldon
