THIS WEEK
1) Shabbat Morning Minyan, December 5th, 10:00 am
Altshul will meet Shabbat morning, December 5th, in the Rabbi’s
Office at Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place, Brooklyn, NY
11215. Kindershul will start at the beginning of the torah service.
This meeting replaces the Shabbat morning davening scheduled for
November 28th.

Altshul will meet Shabbat morning, December 12th, in the Rabbi’s
Office at Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place, Brooklyn, NY
11215. Kindershul will start at the beginning of the torah service.
Services will be followed by a luncheon, open to the community,
sponsored by Jeff and Jessica Trey in honor of the naming of their
daughter, Noemi.
3) Celebrate Hannukah with the Altshul Community!
Altshul is organizing two Hanukkah celebrations:
A celebration particularly geared toward families will take place on
Sunday, December 13th, from 3:00 - 5:00.
On Thursday, December 17th, we will be holding a Hanukkah party and
acoustic open mic! If you would like to sing, recite poetry, display
artwork or photography, perform stand-up, tell a story, or share your
talent in any kind of way, please be in touch with Melissa,
melissak...@mac.com.

4) Kabbalat Shabbat and Maariv, Friday, December 18th, 6:30 pm (Note
earlier winter start time)
Altshul will meet Friday, December 18th for Kabbalat Shabbat and
Maariv at 6:30 pm in the Beth Elohim Rotunda, downstairs in the
Sanctuary
Building, 274 Garfield Place, Brooklyn, NY 11215. Note:
Altshul Friday night services will begin at 6:30
through April.

5) Participation Survey
Please take a moment to fill out Altshul’s annual participation
survey. The survey contains an opportunity to have your information
included in the Altshul community directory and to let us know how you
would like to contribute to Altshul in the coming year. There is no
need to fill out the survey if you filled out a paper copy at one of
the community meetings. Here is the link:

6) Thank You to Everyone Who Contributed to CBE and Altshul
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Congregation Beth Elohim
sanctuary ceiling repair fund. Altshul members contributed a total of
$7846 to the fund. CBE was incredibly appreciative of our community’s
generosity. Thank you for your generosity, and for helping us begin
to repay the tremendous generosity CBE has shown to our community over
several years. In addition, thank you to the many Altshul members who
took this appeal as an opportunity to donate to Altshul. If you
donated, and you wish to receive an acknowledgment of your tax-
deductible contribution for tax purposes, please send an email with
your mailing address to Dalit Ballen Horn at dalit....@gmail.com.
7) Social Action Committee Meeting Sunday 12/6
The Altshul Social Action Committee will be meeting this coming Sunday
evening. We'll be planning upcoming events and talking about our big-
picture plans for the year. New members are welcome!

9) Culture in the Cucina: How Rome's Jews are Cooking up the Past and
Future
While Jews have lived in Italy since the 2nd century BCE ,"Italian
Jewish cuisine" is difficult to define. Still, a handful of
traditional dishes - like Carciofi alla Guidia (deep fried artichokes)
and Pizza Ebraica (a fruit cake-like dessert) - have managed to
endure.
Food writer [and Altshuler!] Leah Koenig, will discuss how certain
traditional recipes have attained iconic status in Rome. *Bonus!
Italian Jewish Chanukah recipes and information about where to find
Roman Jewish food in NYC.

The 2-day festival will take place Saturday night 12/12 and Sunday
12/13. Highlights include a festival introduction and menorah lighting
by New York Times film critic and At the Movies co-host A.O. Scott, 6
feature films, 3 Brooklyn premieres and post-screening discussions
with many of the film directors and subjects.

11) JDub is Looking for a Senior Marketing Director
JDub is looking for a Senior Marketing Director to expand the reach
and scope of our programs and fee-for-service projects. Supervising a
team of 2-3 individuals, the SMD will join the Executive Staff of the
organization, managing a substantial budget to engage hundreds of
thousands of young Jews each year. A successful candidate will have
the opportunity to work as part of a lively team in an idealistic,
people-centered, non-corporate environment in which you will see your
