Multiple categories is fine.
Turn it into the Oscars, I don't care.
Let's just see what folks think is the best zining out there today.

What would be some of the possible categories? I offer up: "Most
Pretentious", "Most Boyfriends/Girlfriends Whined About", "Most
Uninformed", "Most Obscure Band References Used".
But seriously, how can you peg a "best of" when I haven't really heard
anyone agree on what classifies something as a zine – some people
believe that a barcode is the kiss of death, while others believe that
if you aren't churning the wood-pulp yourself to make the paper, it's
not a true zine.
At any rate, categories need to be dependent on production runs:
something like "Bitch" should never be compared to "28 Pages Lovingly
Bound With Twine" at any level.
I thought this zine stopped publishing about 5 or 6 years ago, but it looks
like he just put out a 4th issue. I don't think anything so irregular could
be called best... for the same reason that one of my favorite zines, Genetic
Disorder, can't make the grade for me, one issue every two years just ain't
enough output.
Right now I seem to be a fan of zines in that grey area between zine and
magazine. Punk Planet and Clamor have some of the most intelligent political
and social commentary in the underground press. Razorcake, Venus, While You
Were Sleeping, Bandoppler and Left of the Dial all entertain me. Inner Swine
is probably the funniest zine out there right now and certainly one of the
most consistant. Cometbus always rules. Infiltration the best zine at
focusing on one odd subject and running with it, keeping it fresh and
exciting every issue for the reader. East Coast Inky is one of my favorite
smaller/quirky zines... I think if you wanna have a contest, you do need
categories. -dan
