According to all our Shastras, Ahar Shuddhi is at the root of all
disciplines. There is no difference of opinion about it.
Ahar Shuddho Sattwashuddhi Sattwashuddho Dhruva-smriti
Ahar Shuddhi leads to Sattwa-shuddhi and from Sattwa-shuddhi
comes Para Bhakti. It brings about Ahimsa, i.e. the desire not to kill
other animals. It brings about Karuna, one of the main ingredients of
Shaucha. Mind then does not hanker after rich fares and is content
with simple living. There is then be no need of Steya, i.e. illegally
coveting other’s property. Without Sattwik food; Indriya Nigraha is
impossible. Right type of food creates the right internal environment
to allow mind to concentrate on meditation.
