"Art is anything you can get away with."
"The wheel is an extension of the foot. The book an extension of the eye.
Clothing, an extension of the skin. Electric circuitry, an extension of the
central nervous system."
Who's the author? What's the book?
The quotes are from the author whose book cites the Alfred North Whithead
references that I posted earlier.

Mr Quote: Wow, who am I? How did I get here?
Ms Book: Grammatical error I think, but...
Mr Quote: ...but what?
Ms Book: But don't quote me! Heh! Heh!
Mr Quote: So what causes mistakes, bad monitor?
Ms Book: Yes, or maybe the phone rang in the middle of things?
Mr Quote: Or was it coffee time?
Ms Book: Could'a been a Madonna video on the telly?
Mr Quote: Nah! Maybe Bob Dylan.
The book title you've guessed from the hint, I'll aver. However, "fer" my
err I'll attempt to atone. I'll offer another, not error but koan.
As with the names Brigette Bardot and Claudia Cardinale, this author's first
and last initials alliterate. As do the two missing words in his catch
phrase... "The _____ is the ____."
Regards, E J
I'm not sure who is quote and/or who is book, but I could probably tell you
whose quote and whose book.

Marshall McLuhan..."The medium is the massage."
Now, of which book am *I* thinking?
Clue: he always rings twice.
U.V.
And all this time I thought he'd said *message*. Things begin to make an
entirely different sense...
> Now, of which book am *I* thinking?
The Art of Sensual Massage? The Pillow Book?
I definately don't think it's a work by McLuhan, in any event. Not that
kinda guy!
Sharon
Sharon, I can't tell if you're kidding or not... so probably not for you,
but for someone else who may not be familiar...
MM, whose catchphrase was "The medium is the message," published, in
addition to his routine and scholarly text, a thin tome produced in
association with artist Quentin Fiore.
Titled "The Medium Is The Massage," the book contains a discussion of the
future, accomplished, in part, by being the future. In other words, I mean
pictures, it is one rockin' book, and it anticipates dominance of image.
Regards, Jeff
Can't be the Postman--- too easy! Heh heh! (actually I've no idea what
"Postman" is about, but I'll bet someone in that book is "easy"))
Rings twice?
"The H-Hunchback of N-Notre Dame?"
"Diary of a Bigamist?"
"Angel Touched By Schizophrenia?"
"Biography of Horseshoe Champions?"
McLuhan--- Nice work--- You are good--- it makes me chuckle--- Here's a
toughie I've been meaning to check on----
In what battle did Alexander the Great womp Darius and take, I think, his
wife and daughter captive? I believe Darius and many of his 30,000 men
escaped to run away another day.
The battle was in Palestine, just after the battle at the river (again, I
don't recall the name) during Alexander's initial big swing into the middle
east, I think just before he went into Africa.
In the battle, Alex and his few troops (800 +some locals?) were faced with
decimation, so they went into a "box" formation and charged the Persian
Royalty in the center of their defense.
I'm looking for the name of the battle and info on the formation used. It
came up the other day, in a conversation about orchids and Ponape.
Regards, Jeff
See Jeff's post.

*L* No! (There are more clues in my latest post to Jeff.)
~UV~
The book doesn't have "Postman" in the title. (The clue relates to the
author.)

Amusing (another clue!), but no.

Great--- is that a clue or not--- I can't tell, I could be clueless here...
The good news is, "it's late," I'll have to do wild-ass guesses tomorrow----
The Brothers Chime---- Alex Graham for whom else does the bell tolled twice
and men of La Mancha --- A bell for adenoid and schizophrenic maladies----
Mark Rang Twain, James Pooper Scooper, and I thinks it's late. Manana

Thanks--- I forget that web browsers do B.C. too!
So how's Mink Stole, she been "around" lately? Or is she "wrapped" up?
Yes, I had almost caught on--- a couple more days and I would known for sure
that you were kidding. Next time I'll be a few hours quicker yet!
And yes, my medium gives a good massage but when it comes to clairvoyance
she's telepathetic.
Egads, Jeff
All I can think of is Ring Harder... how about a clue for the clueless?
Jeff
Okay...so far we have as clues:
1. "Postman"--clue to author;
2. "Amusing"--clue to title; and
[new clue]
3. "The Medium Is the Metaphor"--title of Chapter 1.
Got it now? ;-)
~UV~
Doesn't anybody out there have this??? It must be Norman Mailer--- No? All
I remember is he liked to watch (Germaine Greer) and I would describe his
ego like: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island and Norman
Mailer's Ego. His Ego is actually bigger than Staten Island, but he doesn't
have ferry service.
Give me some time on this--- My memory is bad; I used to drink a lot--- or
so they tell me. I need another clue and a drink! Did he run for mayor of
New York?
Egads, Jeff
James Cain...
Whatever, next quiz I'm going to ask for the answer first--- the "wabe" here
is pretty thick for this early in the season.

Amusing Ourselves to Death, Neil Postman.
You want the ISBN?
AH
Thanks--- I was thinking it was time to get Jinko Brian out of the Usenet
Cemetary to terminate that question.
And thanks for the tip, Ultra, I will read the first chapter next time at at
the bookstore--- Unless you say "Don't do it!"
I haven't had time to check on the formations used by Alexander at Issus
and Arbela. The "box" formation may have a fancy name, like "box," or they
might have been winging it.
"Winging it," those guys, I wonder if they even had a plan--- they probably
didn't even know where Afganistan was when they started wandering around out
there.
The Other Jeff
That was it. Great book!

Indulge yourself.
Oh, that reminds me...I enjoyed your math story.

They should have checked maptown.com first.

Oh, good! Please let me know what you think the next time someone to you
says, "Do the math."
Thank fuck for that.

<gasp> That's not very nice!
Sharon
btw- thanks for an answer to a math question. the "equation" is an excerpt
from some major calculations, and was I checking to see if it all added up.
Obviously, I'm not good at math, though I'm willing to learn.
Best, Jeff
Postman's book is old (I was still in University! eek!) and I don't think
he'd be pleased to hear you call it fiction, though I'd concur with that
assessment, The Other Jeff.
Which isn't to slag UV for her taste in books... I'm not that kind of girl
;-)
Sharon
*L* No biggie, Sharon. Poor Dr. Dull seems to be having a bad time of it
lately, what with getting so beaten up by Job and Jervis. His posts this
weekend make him sound more cranky and miserable than ever. If it makes him
feel better to take a tiny snipe at me, that's okay.
~UV~
Well, that's big of ya!

It's always a good idea to doublecheck your figures.

Oh, come on...you're a natural, Jeff. ;-)
Did you see Amy Quan Barry's poem in the May 29th New Yorker? I just read it
last night and thought of your story.
Ultra V.
Tsk, UV. As if!
> His posts this

Far from miserable, UV. Very buoyant. Full of love, in fact.

*kiss* See you can be a cutie when you want to, Paula. You
should work on that. You're such a poor bitch, maybe a spell of
sweetheart will suit you better.
Dr Zen
Or someone else's...
> > Obviously, I'm not good at math, though I'm willing to learn.

No, it was my ex-girlfriend who was the mathematician. She was always
pushing my buttons so I've left her... now she'll have to push her own.

My apologies, but I'm glad that it all occurred at night..

You, Zen, full of love? Tsk. That rotten Payne, it's his doing isn't it?

But that sure ain't! Zenski, I am shocked! "Bitch" - really, now. I'd've
sworn guttermouthing it that way's beneath you.
