POETS OF THE WEEK

~ This week's featured poets are:

DAVID CHORLTON and ROBIN CRANE:

DAVID CHORLTON (Phoenix, Arizona) writes steadily as he takes stock
of the world close to home and far away. He goes out into the Arizona
landscape whenever possible to seek a balance for city life. His
writing has become increasingly entangled with nature and reflects
his travels as well as some imaginary journeys. His book Waiting for
the Quetzal appeared last year from March Street Press.

ROBIN CRANE (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a twenty seven year old
fiction writer and poet, born in Los Angeles, raised on smog and
mom's romanticized notions of Jim Morrison. I have been a janitor,
security guard, mortuary clerk, substitute teacher, an administrative
assistant in a skyscraper with mirrored windows; I am currently a
graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia.
Works of mine have been published in Newtopia and Olympia Literary
Yarn, and a short story is set to appear in the June/July issue of
All Things Girl. In addition, excerpts from the independent
publications I self-published as a teenager have been included in
Zine Scene, a book put out by Girl Press, Inc.

POETRY SUPER HIGHWAY BOOKSTORE

Featured this week in the Poets of the Week Books section of the
PSH Bookstore:

LETTERS FROM PORTUGAL by JAN OSCAR HANSEN

"I never saw the beauty of the sea." "My tree atop the hill murmurs
its gratitude." "Olive trees drip slow tears of immense sorrow,
knowing they can never embrace one another." Jan Oskar Hansen's
attitudes are evident in his poetry: his wish that people were kinder
and gentler; his abhorrence of war, his sense of humour about the
senseless things people, including himself, have done. But it's his
love of plants, animals and all of nature-such a great admiration
that he often uses personification, giving nature human qualities and
emotions in his poems-that is most evident. Perhaps it's this
quality-along with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour-that makes his
poems so unique and endearing. Letters from Portugal is divided into
six chapters: On Love, On War, On People, On Poetry, Hansen
Snapshots, and Letters from Portugal: actual letters from the poet to
his editor. There's something for everyone here. Even those who
aren't frequent readers of poetry will be moved by Hansen's passion,
amused by his sarcasm, and delighted by his ability to paint pictures
of the simple things in ordinary life-making them extraordinary.

Paperback, 160 pages, published by Bewrite Books, (May, 2003)

We are only human; and we all have mood swings, whether we admit it
or not. Witnessing it page by page, you will find that this book
portrays life in Mood Swings, when we collapse into extreme emotions
to unearth ourselves. Often, those insecure fibers of our existence
demand the proper position in relationships, but your stubborn heart
may not want to hear it. Where on earth do you stand.with your
beliefs, lover or kin? Honestly, ones lessons are never completely
over until they finally gain wisdom. Read into the 5
(prose/illustrated) Genres and with admittance it blossoms into
self-love, romance, sensual sex, spirituality and ceases with death.
Ah! Take a deep breath, and you will moan from tingles of pleasure or
pain as you portrait yourself in "Mood Swings."

Ron Cervero's Barbaric Yawp
In a long tradition of "outside" poets, from Whitman's "barbaric
yawp" through Bukowski, comes Ron Cervero, who has crafted a volume
of short rough poems which primarily are written as responses to
daily occurrences, or, more often, outrages. The outrage is keenly
felt, and  Mr. Cervero's responses are often bitter and sardonic.
Cervero claims not to have read Bukowski before writing this volume
and while comparisons, especially eternally being at odds with the
Establishment, are evident, these poems are as fragmentary and
episodic as, say, videotaping a hanging surreptitiously with a cell
phone. Still, they add to define the personality of the poet, whose
tattooed legs and torso are displayed on the cover and whose unique
view becomes more clear with each poem.
