Man brands mother witch for property

Malda - A woman has come knocking on the doors of the Malda
superintendent of police, claiming that her son has been trying to
kill her after branding her a witch. He had his eyes set on the land
that her husband had left her, she claimed.

Hopna Soren, the 46-year-old tribal woman, met Malda SP Bhuban Mandal
on Monday. A resident of Karkutipara village in Habibpur, she has
been staying with her son Ajit Hembram since the death of her Charan
about 15 years back.

Hopna claimed that Ajit had been torturing her for years as he wanted
her to write off the nine bigha plot that Charan had left her.

She had refused to part with it, but Ajit hatched a new plan
recently. His wife has been ill for while, which Ajit claimed was the
handiwork of his mother, whom he branded a witch.

Declaring himself a jaanguru (soothsayer) he asked the villagers to
kill his mother to end the spell of black magic in the village. A
month back, he himself tried to kill her. Hopna managed to flee and
took shelter in her daughter's house. She has not gone back home
since then.

Hopna said, "I had complained to Habibpur police then, but they did
nothing. But my son started thinking of new ways to torture me,
branding me a witch. The villagers too believed him."

The SP said, "This is a serious matter. I've asked Habibpur police
station to take action on her previous complaint. If that can't be
tracked, a fresh case may be started on the basis of her complaint."

Paschimbanga Vigyan Mancha has planned an awareness meeting at the
village on witchcraft to ensure the safe return of Hopna.
