Are there any games that work over Winsock?  i.e. Doom, Chess, etc.?

Yes, there are games that work over winsock.  You can find a great
list of winsock apps that have been reviewed at:
ftp://mrcnext.cso.uiuc.edu/pub/win3/winscok
get the file winterXX.zip ( XX being the lates copy).  I have found it
to be an great resource.  It has a section on games.

There is a winsock compatible chess program that allows you to hook up
the the Internet chess servers.  It is available with Anon FTP from:

 ics.onenet.net

I do not remeber where exactly it is.  I think it is under
Pub\Chess\Win\

The name of the program is Slics and the file is named SLICS20H.ZIP

There's also something call IHHD, Internet head-to-head.  I've never
tried it, but info on it can be found at
http://www.seas.upenn.edu/~liangh/

I think it's supposed to allow serial port type games (like Doom) to
be played over the 'net (I could be wrong).

In a previous article, lapla...@gate.net (Tim Laplaca) says:

if you want to run a game that normaly runs just in dos, under windows,
then again, under winsock. then you'll need a lot of memory/computer power.

(me on my crap 386/25 4 meger, could not do this!)

anyway, there are some small games that ou can play over winsock,
chess is one of them, as to where to find them, dunno.

the thing metioned down below me, (i guess) probily lets you run
a doom net game over a PPP connection, in dos, (as in not under winsock
in any way)

i could be wrong, and i should check it out before i say anything more.
everything i've seen so far has just let you use doom over PPP
in DOS.
