I'm trying to become a moderator over at the free forum...Big AL
has too much power and closes down threads too soon but there is a
way around. go here: http://free.avg.com/download-update
You want the two lower files, the ones with iavi and avi within
their file names.

here is a C & P of my post in the forum............:

This is not for the faint hearted...do this only if you intimately
know your system. First, go to www.majorgeeks.com..to the antivirus
subcatagory, look down you'll see the listings for AVG.

{no need to go to majorgeeks...I gave you the URL........}

{snipped}

The next page gives a warning...ignore it but the file sizes[a
binary .bin] is about 30-40 Mb or about 10 minutes on a 256k
connection. Do not update your clock as stated in the sticky
here, you should do that as a standalone operation when connected to
the NIST time servers[? Yahoo it]. Before you click the indicated
button...create an easy to find folder, with an easy name. Set your
Windows download manager to go to that folder, ditto if you're using
a third party product. Click and make sure its going where you want
or start over. Once the binary is in your folder right click the AVG
icon in the taskbar as you normally would for a manual update but
obviously you want to select "Folder" not Internet and when the
Windows popup comes on screen direct the manager to the folder you
created. AVG should detect and if it does, you will get the regular
update screen and watch for the files being loaded. At first my AVG
did not use the new database because it was on a schedule but on a
manual scan it did. You can confirm installation by observing the
lower right side bar for version and date and also in the Control
Centre dialogue/window. Current version is.......270.12.11/2095
released on 5/4/2009.....it is now 03:10 Eastern at the time of
posting this. CC reports Last Test was run on 5/5/2009 at 2:01:00 AM
on the same line as the version. When you've run testing with the
new database once or twice, you can if you want delete it without
affecting performance of AVG 7.5 or keep it as an archive but I
don't see why you would....you only need the most current download.

I don't know how to make it any plainer than that.

AL....leave this post alone.

Plus you can confirm in the CC by clicking 'information' then
'about'.

I just did it again now and have in the Information box...version
tab..

Program version: 7.5.557
Virus base: 270.12.21/2101 Release date:5/6/2009 5:58 PM

Now version 7.5.557 is what they let you have up to April 30th,
however filehippo only has 7.5.524a in their archives...not sure
what that means for new installations yet. My last PIII died of old
age last December. This Asus I'm on now only supports 2000 or
later....if I get another socket 370 board, I can rebuild my
multiboot system and will try 7.5.524. Of course, you are welcome to
try and see if it sets itself up to 7.5.557 or not. Either way, at
the URL site what you want in the two bottom most files, the upper
two only work if you have 8.x! Again, you want the ~35Mb file and
the ~5-7Mb file near the bottom.
It is a bit of work but useful if you want to keep 7.5.xxx and
Win98 going.

Spread the word my fellow droogies!!!!!!

Yup, that worked.
Reminds me of the ol' manual McAfee download days.

Could just be me but this method stopped working
for me yesterday. I had used it successfully for
about three weeks.

AVG didn't recognize the latest update files.
Downloaded them twice, so not a corruption issue.

Ripped AVG out by the roots and replaced it
with Avast.

Well I just updated manually after supper on Wednesday....let me
look..

Control Centre :

Information....About....
I have Virus database:270.12.43/2138 Release Date:5/27/2009 6:21 PM
on the version tab in the info dialogue.
I know it hiccupped for me on Saturday because the full files didn't
d/l for some reason, then it worked on Sunday.

I would clear the cache in your browser[s] clean out all but the most
neccesary cockies and try again.

When I do my daily again, I'll see and report back in 48-60 hours.
I still don't have another socket 370 yet so I can't test for W98
only 2000 Pro [this Asus board] and XP on the HTPC.

The hiccup could be not waiting long enough between AVG's postings
and accidently getting the old files twice.
