shortcut arrows, menus and button popups

Hi,

Am new to 98 as I had been using 95 for sometime with realtively few
problems. It was along time ago, but I remember reading some
tips in a PC magazine. One of them got rid of those damned annoying
arrows on the shortcut icons and another sped up access to menus
by ceasing the scrolling animation and just having them appear
immediately as they did in old Windows. I can't find the article
of course, but am wondering if there is a similar procedure one can
go thru to do the same things with 98. (All I can remember with 95 was
that you had to make alterations to a couple of Regsitry files).

I know it probably sounds pedantic but the shortcut arrows annoy me,
the scrolling menus really annoy me as I like to save a little extra time
if they opened quicker, and the little popup labels which appear on mouseover
a button really, REALLY annoy me.

Finally, is there a way of viewing directories WITHOUT using what looks like a
web browser? (I want my, I want my, I want my File Manager)

Any tips anyone?

Download Tweak UI from microsoft.com. It has a lot of good tweaks,
including those you mentioned. You can use the old filemanager app that Win
3.1 had in Win98 (run winfile.exe), but you lose support of long file names.
I'm sure there are some better ones to use. Look on downloads.cnet.com for
one.

There are in general three way:

1. A direct registry edit--the most difficult and most
dangerous way.

2. The use of a third-party program like TweakUI that does
the registry edit for you safely.

3. Right-click on the desktop and choose Properties. On the
Appearance tab, lower the icon size to a number 31 or
smaller.

But I don't recommend doing any of these. The arrow serves
an important purpose: providing quick visual distinction
between a file and a shortcut to it. Remove the arrow, and
it will probably be just a matter of time before you delete
something you need, thinking you are just deleting a
shortcut to it.

If you really want it, it's still available in 98.

File manager is still in windows 98, 98SE and Millenium. Program manager is
still there also. To use either of those just go to start, run and for File
manager type "winfile" and click ok. For Program Manager do the same but
type "Progman". If you want to change from Explorer as the default shell,
edit System.ini in the [boot] section, change the line "shell=explorer.exe"
to "shell=winfile.exe or progman.exe" whatever your preference may be.

You must be careful with Winfile, though. It doesn't support LFN, and
"managing" your files ( renaming, moving, copying, etc.) can really
mess up your system - particularly with directories which contain
program files. It would be better to use one of the replacements
(Powerdesk, Filewrangler, etc.).
