Vista Basic to Home Premium

I've got a smallish laptop coming which has Vista Basic installed. I
plan on upgrading to Windows 7 but as Vista Basic doesn't show as
upgrade eligible to 7, I'm wondering if I can make thing simpler by just
upgrading from Basic to Home Premium first? I own both a stand alone
Home Premium as well as an upgrade. I've never upgraded anything within
the Vista package so I'm not sure how it works. Is it like anything
else, insert the CD/DVD and I'll get a screen prompt asking what I want
to do or is there some special preferred methodology?
