Every time I try to open a picture in "My Pictures" I get the message,
"UXCore.dll cannot be found", and when I close that I see another
message, "Error loading C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Photo
Gallery\WLXPhotoViewer.dll The specified module could not be found"

I really would be most grateful for a solution that I can follow and
apply to fix this problem. I have tried forums and websites but there
seems to be a vagueness about the solutions offered or perhaps I simply
have not understood their instructions, either way I am still stuck with
the problem and don't know how to remove it.

Open a picture with what? What program do you expect
to see come up? It could be a corrupted, or missing file
that is installed with that program and needs to be fixed,
by placing a new copy of the file where it belongs.

Have you tried the web site for the folks who make the
software that you are trying to use to view pictures with?

Sorry, entirely my fault and my apologies for bothering you but I
discovered it was something called Windows Live picture viewer that was
"attempting" to open my pictures. I changed the program to open my
pictures to Windows Picture and Fax viewer and that has solved my
problem.

Many thanks and my apologies for not doing the above before I posted my
question. However, can I ask what is the preferred default program to
open "My Pictures"?

Windows Live Picture Viewer is an add-on from MS. It doesn't ship with XP.
Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is the default viewer.

Thank you very much for that confirmation and I have in fact selected
Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. I also intend to uninstall Windows Live
Picture Viewer and I don't care what it does as it has caused me so much
trouble.
Thanks again for your kindness and trouble.

No problem. :)

Whatever program you like and decide to install. :)

Ashampoo has a free version of their Photo Commander 6.

It's simple and does most of what one would want to do
with an image file. :)
