When I boot up or reboot Windows XP, Skype attempts to update. I see
these entries in the Application section of Windows Event Viewer:
Service started.
SkypeUpdate service is shutting down due to idle timeout.
Service stopped.

Is there some way to prevent this? I only want to update software when
I am ready. Thus, I disable all automatic updates that I can. Even
Windows XP security updates have to wait until I am ready, but I do
accept notices that updates are available.

I am asking here since Skype is now a Microsoft product.

Have you tried changing the SkypeUpdate service to "Disabled" in
SERVICES.MSC?

I did not know that.

There is no .msc file on my PC that contains either "Skype" or "update".

There wouldn't be. "MSC" are the control panel applets that interface
with the Event Viewer, Disk Manager, Services, etc. They are programs.

Click Start | Run, and type in SERVICES.MSC, Or, alternately, open
Control Panel | Adminitrative Tools | Services. Look down the list to
find the SkypeUpdate Service. Double-click it and change its Startup
Type to "Disabled".

In article <XnsA036A3C5...@wheedledeedle.moc>,
redn...@REMOVETHIScomcast.net says...
Perhaps if you click on the start button and then the letter r (for run)
than type msconfig you might see the offending program that is starting
when your computer boots.

You can uncheck it. Also in Skype itself you might change the
preferences, to not check for updates.

Also sometimes when I use a program uninstaller,
I can actually see programs that run and search for updates. They can
be uninstalled.

An example is google does it, so does Apple.

A decent uninstaller program that is free is called Revo Uninstaller.
It is freeware. There is a pro version too, but it honestly doesn't do
much that the free one doesn't.
The Pro version has some cleanup tools and searching tools.

Revo will 1st make a system restore entry, in case for some reason you
need to restore your system to the point before you uninstalled a
program.
Then it runs the uninstall program that comes with almost all program.
(What windows uninstall uses)
then it will search all entries in your registry and hard disk that
mention the program you are unstalling, and show you a list of all of
them, you can uncheck some if for some reason that you might want to.
Perhaps if it is some sort of a bundeled program and you wanted to
keep part of it(?)
After looking at that list click on delete, and your system will be
completely free of a program you do not want anymore.

It is a really good program, and I have tried quite a few over the
years.

Unlike its predecessors (developed before Skype was bought out by
Micro$oft), Skype 5.9 finally has an option to disable automatic
updates. For some strange reason, however, I must login before I can
set that option.
