Hi...
We have a good idea about what colors we want to have in our June wedding
but I wanted to run them by somebody... what do you all think: my dress
is ivory silk shantung. My bridesmaid dresses will be a sage green
(actually, Celedon) and I want my other colors to be lighter blues (like
cornflower blue?), lavenders/lilacs, and maybe a hint of pale pink and
pale yellow. Kind of muted, soft tones (not really pastels, but I'm not
against pastels either). Does this sound hideous to you?

Also, about florists... I have talked with a few and told them about the
colors and overall style I want, but I don't have a really clear idea of
what particular flowers I want (I am clueless when it comes to flowers).
I don't know what flowers would look good together. All of the florists
expected me to tell them exactly what flowers I want in the bouquets and
boutonnieres and everything... my expectations were that the florist
would work with my colors and style and site and come up with ideas for
us to discuss. Am I expecting to much from the florist? Do you have any
book recommendations about different flowers (with pictures!)?

Thanks for listening! susan

Your colours sound like a wonderful choice. You bouquets would look
beautiful. In fact those are the colours I had in my bouquets. I'm surprised
florist haven't made any suggestions to you. There are a few bouquets on
Apropos' web site you could check out also arrangements that would have the
kind of flowers your looking for.

June is a wonderful time for these flowers. I think lush hand-tied bouquets
would be great. Cornflower or bachelor's button is available in June.
Delphinium is also blue. Of course roses are always wonderful and come in
every colour but blue. Peonies are available and come in shade of pale pink,
ivory and white. Scabiosa comes in blue, as well as iris. There's a lovely
alstroemeria called Mona Lisa that gives an antique look to bouquets. It's a
very soft cream with a touch of pink at the throat. It looks wonderful with
mauves and pinks. A favourite of mine is a yellow-green filler flower called
Lady's Mantle or Alchemellia. It offers a beautiful contrast to all those
colours and has a lovely grey-green leaf.

That is just a start. I get begin to name all the flowers available. There
are also many other web sites available with pictures of cut flowers.

I hope this gives you a start.

I think that sounds eminently reasonable. Didn't use fresh flowers for my
wedding, but when I've used florists in the past I've always expected them to
come up with ideas after I outlined needs (colors, cost, stylized or casual,
fragrant or not, size and showiness,) and they've always obliged.

susan, i am also clueless about flowers. we wanted mostly roses with a
few other things thrown in for color, texture, variety, etc...my
bridesmaids are wearing eggplant so we went with ivory roses for them,
my dress is ivory and i was afraid it wouldn't show up if i had an
ivory bouquet. i talked to many florists, until i found one that i was
comfortable with, then i told her what kind of bouquet i wanted (round,
hand tied and mainly roses) and left the color and other stuff up to
her. i don't know what it will look like, but knowing her, and seeing
her stuff i'm utterly confident it will be beautiful. it also gives me
somewhat of a surprise to look forward to on the wedding day =)

from what i understand she's going for cream roses that have the
colored edges for the main flowers, and i don't know what the other
stuff will be, i'll let you know when i do my summary in a few weeks...

so maybe if you can, find a florist you feel comfortable with, and
leave the decision up to her. it's worked for me, and it's one less
thing to worry about. =)

Your colors sound fine. I would personally go with a smaller number of
colors, but that is just my preference. I think they will look very
beautiful together. There are many flowers in those colors. Liles come in
many different colors, as well as roses and tulips. There is also iris which
comes in pastels. Gladiolas are also very nice, but they are tall. I would
suggest a filler in lighter tones, instead of the normal dark green ivy or
whatever. Forget-me-Nots are small blue flowers with yellow centers. They
might look nice. Here are some questions you need to answer:

1. What type of bouquets do you want? cascade, clutch, nosegay, presentation
(long-stemmed). For yourself, you may want a cascade or round bouquet, and
for your bridesmaids, you may want a smaller clutch bouquet or longer, larger
presentation, depending on the flowers you choose.

2. Do you want just one or two types of flowers, or more of a variety? Look
at pictures to decide what you like best.

3. What syle is your wedding? Is it at night or in the afternoon? If it is
very elegant you are looking for, you might go with a few longer stemmed
flowers for your bridesmaids (like calla lilies). If you would rather have
something more romantic-looking or simple, go with smaller nosegays.

No, you are not expecting too much from your florist. She should work with
you. I some idea on flowers, but not exactly. My floris sat down with me
and wanted to see pictures of my dress and bridesmaid dresses to see the
styles. She showed me pictures and told me what would look good together.
She told me what all the flowers were called. I kind of just left it up to
her to make the final decisions. If your florist will not work with you, you
should change florists. I hate you tell you that, but it is true.

For your bouquet, you should hold a few and see what they look like and how
they feel. If you are small, you will want something smaller so it does not
overpower you. If your dress is elaborate, go with something more simple,
and vice versa. If you are tall, go with a large cascading bouquet. For
your bridesmaids (and youself) look in bridal magazines at the bouquets in
there. Find flowers you like or arrangements you like. Show them to your
florist so she can get an idea of what you like. Ask her if she has
magazines you can look at. My florist had tons!!

I wish you the best of luck. If you need any more advice on this subject,
such as flower suggestions or anything else for that matter, e-mail me.

Try going to paint stores and picking up
paint chips. Celedon (which I adore!!) it
pretty popular so you may find paint that
is in the same family.

If you have a swatch of the dress, you can
hold up various paint chips and get an
idea if those colors will work. You can't
necessarily match the colors exactly, but
it might give you some ideas.

As for the florist, they should be providing
more help. I'd keep looking. I would expect
you to say "pale yellow" and them to tell
you what flowers would work.

Or, in a related vein, go to a fabric store and find several prints that
combine colors you like. You don't need to like the fabric itself --
it's easiest to find color combinations in calico, which probably isn't
what you want for a wedding :) -- just the color combination. Buy a
quarter or half yard of a couple appealing options, then use them to
find ribbon colors for any crafts that you want to do (centerpieces,
favors, etc.). You want to start with a couple choices in case one color
scheme no longer can be matched with any ribbons or other craft-ware.

Sounds lovely. But I must admit, pale blue flowers is kind of hard.
Delphinium and irises are usually brighter shades, but I believe they do come
in more pale blues and purples. Roses, of course, are obvious choices for pink
and yellow. Lilac and lavender *are* flowers as well as color names.

Maybe you could use cream roses and tie the bouquets with striped or plaid
ribbon in all of the colors?

Whether you're asking too much probably depends on the type of florist you've
been talking to. The sort of service you're expecting *is* normal from a
floral design type shop that specializes in weddings -- but they cost a lot
more than the neighborhood Valentines Day-Mother's
Day-birthdays-weddings-funerals-hospitals "bucket shop" which can provide you
with equally beautiful flowers for a lot less, but where you won't ordinarily
find the same level of design help.

Although this is easier when you still have a full year before the wedding (so
you can do it in the right season), try visiting your local "bucket shops".
See what they have that you like, and ask the attendant for the names of those
flowers. Write them down.

If you have friends whose June weddings you admired, ask them for the names of
their flowers.

The only books we looked at were the ones the florists had. :-) It *was*
helpful -- one of them even had a little chart showing when various flowers
were in season. Many florists also have photo albums of their past work; if
you point to something in such an album and ask the florist, "what is that?"
she certainly ought to be able to tell you.

Also, if your site has photos of past weddings at the site, examine those
photos for ideas on placement, size, and type of decorations.

Good luck!

You can view a lot of different bouquets at this web site.
www.elegancebydesign.com. I looked at the pictures and they were great and I think
there may be one or two bouquets that may be the colors you are looking for. Good
luck!
