I was browsing around looking for cake pictures on the web
when I found this site. As it turns out, most of the sites
I saw only have one or two pictures of cakes, but this
one had about a dozen, plus some nice grooms cakes as well.
Here is the URL: http://www.carbuyingtips.com/cakes.htm
Rather an unlikely domain, huh?
Does anybody know of other sites that have more than just
one or two sample pictures? I am trying to get an idea of
what I would like and how much different types of designs
cost.
Thanks!

p.s. Also, the site has a little picture of Prince Charming and
Cinderella (?) that is *so* funny. They are supposed to be
spinning like they are dancing, but it looks more like they
are caught in a blender.

Kelley,
I've seen very few sites that list prices, but I do know of a few that have
great pictures of cakes, from unique to 'typical'.

if you can, go to your library or local mega-bookstore, and look for
"Colette's cakes". Colette Peters designs and decorates the most amazing
cakes i've ever seen!! i fell in love with her "faberge topiary wedding
cake" from the book. Now if i only had a tenth of the talent she has, i'd
contemplate making my own cake!!!

Your best bet is to visit some cake shops. Taste the cakes and look at
their cake books. The taste is the key, and prices vary on the flavor
as well as the design. Most places have four "basic" designs, then they
add on top of that for different designs that you may want. We wanted
basketweave, which is more expensive, but our cake flowers were free.
We had Itialian Creme and German Choclate (Groom's) with strawberries on
top. Another things you can do is just search wedding web sites. I
know we have a picture of our cake on our web site. I actually got our
picture for our florist from a photographer. Go to your photographer
and ask to see his proof (or wedding) books. You HAVE to taste them,
though!! That is the best part!

I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice/URL's regarding
the cake URL request I made the other day. I saw lots of really
pretty cakes, though the majority of them were too complex for my
tastes. My favorites were all white, round and stacked on top of
each other in the traditional manner without columns (columns are
all well and good, I just don't think they are for me). Also, the
icing can't be fondant since I don't like it :P
I should also point out that the reason I wanted to browse the web
for pictures is that I am away at school and my wedding will be in
a different state. I did not want to go around tasting and
falling in love with a cake from a vendor here and then not being
able to find a vendor in Ohio who could provide it. But I figure
that the designs are more universal and that I could show a baker
a picture and say, can you make my cake look like this? I am eager
to taste. I love cake! I just don't want to end up wanting
something I can't get.
Thanks again, Everyone!

(snip)
I couldn't agree with you more! I've just recently tried my hand at cake
decorating. I'm getting pretty good at it (it's only a hobby for now) but
the more complex designs that i see and try, the more it makes me want just
a plain white cake for my wedding.!! (well, maybe a few red roses tucked in
between the layers)
I know I've seen examples of rolled buttercream instead of rolled fondant.
I think it was in American Cake Decorating Magazine. you should ask a
bakery about this. I don't know much about it's taste but I would guess
that it is better than fondant yet it has the smooth rolled look to it.
