well, i'm not a total newbie, i've done some html and php coding, but i have
no idea how to go about the practical side of making a website.

how to you choose the name for your website?

if you know someone that says they will host your site on their machine,
what exactly do you do? how do you transfer your site from the place you
registered it to, to the new site?

thanks

1) choose a name you like!
2) use a FTP programme to get it on the host server or use IE at a push

Don't let technical issues come in between you and your creativity or
communication. EZGenerator focuses on building websites rather than
trying to be an HTML editor.

It allows you to add pages where needed and to create categories where
appropriate. It is all as easy as drag-and-drop pages around in your
website administration and it will also transfer the files
automatically to your webspace.

Don't worry about the graphics! EZGenerator will take care of that
based on the template you have choosen.

With EZGenerator you can focus on your content, on the message you
want to bring on your site. But in the end, you will have to choose
the name yourself

Wow, some old postings still around. And my how times have changed,
tripod I believe ended up getting absorbed into Yahoo some time back.

What seems to be a good way to get people into your website currently is
having a website that can do all of the following:

- have dynamic content that changes frequently either using automation
or using blog content, unique blog content by the website owner is
probably best as it shows that the business owner knows the business
(one would hope) Search engines love sites that always change, if
everyone is trying to be top a static site may make it there one day and
be pushed down the ranks the next.

- Have customers refer you out to friends, referrals are still an
awesome way to get business and using sharethis or add this tools for
example as well as like buttons for facebook and linking your site out
to the popular social networks can really get people coming in quickly,
you may of heard the tern viral describing a video or a picture, this
does not mean infected and will harm your computer but rather something
that people share and share again on the internet. A funny video clip
which is an ad for your business could be a way to go viral and really
ramp up the visits.

- Be the best, being visited allot via the web is no garantee of
initial or repeat business, for example being a member of the BBB which
Islandnet.com is and being ranked as a great company (as we are "A+") is
also a way to get repeat business.

Content management systems with the right plugin set will allow you to
manage website content, add new content that will automatically post to
social networks is a good start to get yourself our there and ontop:

Here is a suggestion:

Wordpress
- SEO Plugin (Platinum plugin is well known)
- A ping.fm plugin to post content out to a ping.fm account.
- Configure the ping.fm account to post out to twitter/facebook and
other popular networks making sure that they then dont cross post to
each other, easy way to get banned.

Have some fairly static page content, with changing blog content,
enable web stats to monitor how your doing and use some other tools
social media tools such BackTweets or AddictoMatic to then see how far
and wide your getting mentioned and in what contexts. Also using Google
Alerts, Google Small Business Directory as ways to measure your success
and tailor your approach.

Joining popular forums and Q&A like Google Groups and/or Yahoo Answers
and contributing with useful help to your target audience is also a good
idea as this is indexed by Google, make sure you have informative
signature about who you are and how your business can be found.
Offering help to people that is really valuable and free will make then
remember you.
