deposition. An unsettled question was why Bush's personal diaries were
withheld from prosecutors for six years; their existence was only
disclosed to the independent counsel's office following the 1992
presidential election. Throughout 1993, Walsh sought to interview the
former president but was blocked by Bush's attorneys. Bush
consistently insisted on placing limits on any interview. Walsh
refused those limits, complained that Bush was stalling the
investigation, and ultimately abandoned the attempt to question Bush.
Walsh also chose, in 1993, not to indict another high-ranking Reagan
administration official, former attorney general EDWIN MEESE III. In
1986, Meese said that Reagan did not know about the arms sales to
Iran. Walsh contended that the statement was false, but admitted that
building a criminal case against Meese would have been difficult: too
much time had passed and could therefore have bolstered memory loss as
a defense.
On August 6, 1992, after six-and-a-half years and $35.7 million, Walsh
concluded the Iran-Contra investigation and submitted his final report
to the special court that had appointed him. By 1993, the Iran-Contra
Affair seemed over, in one sense. The STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS on crimes
that may have been committed during it had expired, and no further

1986 Iran-Contra Affair .... Fast Forward 2002 Henry Kissinger, the
former US secretary of state who has been accused of war crimes by his
critics, was yesterday appointed by George Bush to head the
investigation into the September 11 attacks.
It represents the latest in a series of moves by the president to
rehabilitate previously discredited or controversial figures.
Mr Bush signed legislation yesterday that creates a new independent
commission, headed by Dr Kissinger, to investigate the attacks. The
appointment received the backing of both Democrats and Republicans.
"This commission will help me and future presidents to understand the
methods of America's enemies and the nature of the threats we face,"
Mr Bush said at a White House signing ceremony attended by the
relatives of September 11 victims.
"Dr Kissinger will bring broad experience, clear thinking and careful
judgment to this important task... we share the same commitment."
He thanked Dr Kissinger for "returning to the service of your
nation."
Dr Kissinger, 79, said he would take the investigation to wherever
"the facts lead us. We are under no restrictions, and we will accept
no restrictions. This is not a matter simply for New York, it is a
matter for all of America. To the families concerned, there's nothing
that can be done about the losses they've suffered, but everything
must be done to avoid that such a tragedy can occur again."
His task will be to investigate intelligence failures and whether the
attacks could have been avoided.
The 10-member commission will consist of an equal number of Republican
and Democratic nominees. They have 18 months to report, although Mr
Bush indicated yesterday that he expects much swifter conclusions.
"The sooner we have the commission's conclusions, the sooner this
administration will act on them."
Kissinger's appointment is a controversial one. Several recent books
and a documentary have questioned his honesty and integrity.
Christopher Hitchens's book, The Trial of Henry Kissinger, accuses him
of war crimes for his activities in Vietnam, Cambodia and Chile and
Daniel Ellsberg's new book, Secrets, currently in the best-seller
lists, paints a damning picture of his behaviour during the Vietnam
war era.
Dr Kissinger's ability to travel abroad is already circumscribed,
because of fears that he could face arrest in some countries. He has
been asked by Chilean courts to testify about the 1973 coup.
Earlier this week, in a traditional light-hearted ceremony, President
Bush spared the life of a turkey which would otherwise have been on a
Thanksgiving Day dinner table.
He seems to be adopting the same policy towards many politicians
previously thought to have sunk into obscurity.
Vice-Admiral John Poindexter, who was jailed and then pardoned for his
role in the Iran-Contra scandal, has just been appointed to a new
'information awareness office' charged with compiling intelligence
data.
Others returning to the fold include Elliott Abrams, convicted of
misleading Congress over Iran-Contra then pardoned by George Bush
senior, who now heads the office of democracy and human rights.

President, a stroke from a crazed group of fanatics who hate Americans

America's Reichstag fire? Was the USA PATRIOT Act the enabling act for

Clearly Britain, USA and the Soviet Union all played instrumental
parts in winning World War 2 on the Eastern Front for the allies.
Whilst Britain and Particularly the USA were focused on the far east
the Soviet Union was the one that was allowed to solely focus on the
Nazis and as a result contributed the most to winning the war.
1. The USSR faced the brunt of the Nazi war machine. Between 1941-1945
67.5% of German divisions and troops were located in the Soviet Union.
(1) 54.25% of Nazi aircraft were also fighting in the Soviet Union
between 1941 to 1944. Of the 3.35 million German soldiers who died in
ww2(2), 2.8 million were killed on the Eastern front or 84%. The
majority of the German divisions not stationed in the Soviet Union
were or occupation and not for fighting. It was the Soviets who faced
and destroyed the majority of the German army.
2. Many would call the victory at Stalingrad as the turning point in
the Eastern front as the Germans failed to achieve any significant
victories after the defeat. This was on the second of February 1943.
Britain and USA did not land in Europe and more specifically Sicily
until the 9th of July 1943. The war was already over by the time the
USA and the commonwealth launched the Italian campaign. By the time
Germany surrendered on the second of May the Allies had failed to take
Italy and the entire 2 year long campaign was after the Soviets were
winning on the Eastern Front. Certainly by D-Day the allies were
simply speeding up the process and using it get what little leverage
they could for post war negotiations.
All the countries fighting the Axis won the war. No country alone
could. But when asking, on the European front, who pushed the Germans
back the furthest, who captured their capital city, Berlin, causing
Hitler to kill himself and who went fighting beyond Berlin, and halted
waiting for the others to come from the other side? The answer would
rather simply be the Soviets.
