Most PBS stations are carrying "The Sixties: The Years That Shaped A
Generation" tonight (9/29/05).

It's a 2 hour documentary, not shown on TV before.

Most East coast PBS stations carry it at 9:00, which is inly 45 mins
from now.

On a scale of 1 - 10, the show rated a "6", maybe a "7".

It was bad enough that Todd Gitlin repeated his tired old myth about
the antiwar movement ignoring Humphrey(when actually it was vice versa)
and smothering himself in his self-induced guilt for not voting in
1968, but then they showcased reptiles like Ed Meese, Bork, and
Buchanan, and finally they trotted out that old war criminal himself,
Kissinger. And that was indefensible.

marcus,

Just happened to catch most of that show and trying to compress the
60's into 2 hours is an impossibility. However, I did enjoy the music
and while I was anticipating the liberal POV, I was greatly delighted
to pick up great amounts of doubt, skepticism and indecision in all
those interviewed. They weren't sure then and they aren't sure now.

Yes, the 60's and early 70's were a very exciting and dramatic period in
which I attended college, the University of Texas at Austin (graduated in
1968) and went to Vietnam 1969-1970. I saw it all and was in the middle of
the same, the protests, the war, flower children, the sexual revolution, the
civil rights revolution, and tolerance. The USA has never come close to
experienceing the excitement and color and drama of the same. I, really
miss that time!
I served with the U.S. Army;4th Inf. Div.;2/8th Inf.; RVN 1969-1970.

Really?!?

Jane Fonda used to have some credibility, but she's nothing more than a
Sixties Sell-Out. She was right about Vietnam, and yet she went before
quasi-patriots like the American Legion, and "apologizes" to them. For
what? She did nothing wrong.

I know that recently she came out against the war in Iraq, but it is
too little, too late.

Yup. The rightwing kooks here think people like fonda kept the
Vietnamese so encouraged that they kept going on and on, when otherwise
they would have just given up and surrendered. Kook is the operative
word.

The truth is we could not have won the Vietnam war without invading NV and
killing just about every man, women and child there -- The other truth is
that the American people, along with China and Russia would not have stood
for that.

Yes, couldn't agree with you more. It's really a empty-headedness
notion that one American woman, who went to North Vietnam was somehow
responsible for promoting patriotic zeal and energy to the people she
visited. They had it long before because they were fighting to rid
themselves of colonialism, whether it be the French or the Americans.
They were an occupied nation. People in that situation fight to the
teeth to rid themselves of their oppressors. Someone living in the
same country as the invading forces, is always viewed with suspicion,
no matter how altruistic their aims may be.

There's a vital lesson in what I've said above for today's war in Iraq.
The mis-named "insurgency" will not die until the Americans leave.
These people have nothing left to lose. They want us out. We are the
problem. And yet, the "empty-heads" still persist in blaming the
antiwar movements for "providing aid and comfort to the enemy". What a
damned stupid expression. It's their country. Mesopotamia ahas a
7,000 year history. I think the iraqis would be able to work out their
own problems without us there. They are, after all, adults.

And one more thing, why is there this prevalent attitude in this
newsgroup that if one was not an armed forces veteran, we should not be
posting here. Nothing in the description of this newsgroup says it's
for veterans only. isn't there a Vietnam War veterans ng set up for
that? I say to those who view non-military posters here as
interlopers...go to the Vets only newsgroup. Love it or leave it (Ha,
I've always wanted to say that!!!).

Of course, the real reason that many of the Vets who post here,
wouldn't want to post at an all-Vietnam Vets newsgroup is that their
comments would be ridiculed and put down by the many Vets who came to
the conclusion that America's war in Vietnam was wrong. They wouldn't
stand a chance. They wouldn't be able to bully others like they do
here.

Red Jacket: I used to listen to Rush when he first started. He was
funny and entertaining but after he became so popular - like so many
celebs - he started taking himself seriously and turned into a
pompous, self-absorbed ass. The only time I listen to his show now is
if I happen to tune it on in my car radio and there is a guest host on
- like Armstrong Williams, Tony Snow or the former mayor of San Diego
(can't think of his name right off). They are not only interesting and
entertaining hosts (especially Williams)but actually talk with numerous
callers of differing opinions.

Barry Sadler was a courageous Vietnam Vet (Green Beret) who recorded
the album "Ballard of the Green Berets" - which I have.

What is the definition of a "rethread"?

I can tell you, without hesitation, that I do not hate myself. It
seems that when someone says something that confronts your
pre-conceived ideas, you accuse them of being hateful. In other
words,if someone doesn't agree with you, and points out the lies,

Of course, if you aren't confused(and a read of your past posts
certainly would show that to be a lie)then you are lying. This ng,
alt.war.vietnam, is not just for Vets, it's for everyone, regardless of
whether they were ever in the military or not. It is nuts for you to
be saying anything different.

Contrary to your feeble attempt to copy my post, I have nothing against
someone who served in the military. I do have problems with someone
who served in Vietnam, and 35-40 years later, they still think that it
was a noble effort, and that it was right for the United States to have
invaded that nation. It was a war based on lies...just like the
current war in Iraq.

You couldn't be more wrong. Please give me the names of three
hippies(turncoat David Horowitz doesn't count) who now "admit" they
were an embarassment. I haven't rewritten the Sixties, it's the
right-wing-fundamentalist-corporate world who began a culture war in
the late 1970s and early 1980s, who rewrote the Sixties, to cast them
in a bad light, and obviously did a pretty good brainwashing effect on
someone like you. Think for yourself for once...the results might
surprise you. Stop being a lemming.

The Sixties were the greatest era of the 20th century, it was the
decade when a generation finally had the balls to question misguided
authority. Unfortunately, the people who have rewritten it, and have
you by the short and curlies, now control 90% of the media, and
entertainment industry...so you get this Sixties revisionism. Your
thoughts about the Sixties are proof of your thoughts being controlled
and formulated by these folks. Again, think for yourself...don't be
passive...ask questions.

There is no world communist movement...and there never was. What they

communism. Besides, haven't you heard(or don't they deleiver the news

If you ever saw Dwight Eisenhower's farewell address, you might get an
inkling. If you ever heard of the Business Roundtable, that could be a
clue too. If you remember the Jerry Falwell/Ronald Reagan spree in the
early 80s, that might speak to you as well.

Contrary to your feeble attempt to copy my post, I have nothing
against
someone who served in the military. I do have problems with someone
who served in Vietnam, and 35-40 years later, they still think that it
was a noble effort, and that it was right for the United States to
have
invaded that nation. It was a war based on lies...just like the
current war in Iraq.

So what ?

OK, let me see if I have this correct.

Are you saying to me that you were against America's war against
Vietnam, and are you also saying that you are against America's war
against Iraq?

Because if you are, you sure have had a very strange way of stating it
in all of your posts.

The 60s ended 35 years ago yakyak. Its time you forgave yourself for not
being able to get any. Whats it like to be as old as you and a male
virgin? If you got out of the rent-controlled apartment you hide in and
visited sparky, I bet she would spread 'um for you. She has for everyone
else.

sharky have the guts to put your ass were your mouth is; get to iraq and
fight for bush. Ooops I forgot. You're a wannabee who only claims to
have been in the service. You don't have any guts.

PS: I have several years to sue you for libel. And it cut and dried you

Ha Ha Ha!!!

There's a 3rd kind of American...the Elites (yaketyak likes to post about these).

Truly I never thought of myself as an Elitist until yaketyak started posting,
now I know there is at least 1 person that I am definitely superior to.

Yep. Seriously, not intended as insult.

Forget the right-wing cultural war propaganda about the Sixties. It was
a time that opened peoples' eyes, and an era that fell victim to one of
the most concerted efforts to diss it, based on the lies of corporate
power, right-wing powere trippers, and fundamentalist bigots.

It was a fantastic time, never to be repeated.

civil rights
women's rights
free speech movement (yep...college students! did not have free speech)
the war...that enraged us
question authority
the music!
sexual revolution
drugs
in a word...freedom! I felt it, and still feel it.

When I got to college, panty raids were the big thing. When I graduated, the
whole campus was in an uproar over the war and other issues.

After thinking about it, I agree with you.
