Friends,

In the context of another thread I disengeniously asked for a reference
to the single volume I missed in reading about the ACW about the
blessings of slavery.

There was no response and I expected none.

Here are some observations:

Slavery has many permutations. Jews were killed, some of them were
preserved for a short time to assist in that process.

In the Gulag, slaves were worked to death. No matter, since there were
always replacements.

In Dixie, slaves were a valuable commodity and their value consisted of
their labor. So imprisoning them would have been foolish. Whip and brand
them, and send them out to gather some more cotton.

Now, here are the blessings: " Arbeit macht Frei"; destruction of the
class enemy; and we are saving the darkies for the Lord.

This is just about relatively modern times.

REgards, Axel

Axel, why are you relating "Jews killed" to "slavery" in North America,
(North or South)? Some "Jews" owned slaves in the south as did some
blacks and some Native Americans (John Ross ?) - Maury

Reminds me of U.S. Grant's policy towards *all* POWs.
They were all expendible (North and South) and the
North had plenty of "replacements". -- Maury

True and for the benefit of the North and English mills. -- Maury

They were a part of an established system of "supply and demand".

The South didn't keep all of that cotton, it sold that product
and the buyers were equally as as guilty as the sellers. - Maury

Perhaps, perhaps not. - Maury

>Whip and brand them, and send them out to gather some more cotton.

The problem there is that it causes such bitterness a slave would
become a runaway or might kill himself, either which would lose
a large sum of money. -- Maury

If Brooks Simpson saw that and you were a pro-South poster,
you would be reminded a few hundred times in many forms, including
exaggerated forms, but always reminded and often out of context.

EH? Were slaves not a valuable commodity in New York, New Jersey and
Pennsylvania, when slavery was legal there? Or was their labor valuable
only in Dixie? Slavery was pervasive throughout the New World, especially
in the more tropical climes. Why? Because it was the New World, and in
order to colonize it, to develop and exploit the natural resources, a
large labor force was necessary. Considering the lack of medicine to fight
tropical diseases, and the potential lethality of various feverous
illnesses, Europeans in the 17th and 18th centuries were not exactly
falling over themselves for the opportunity to die in malarial swamps
harvesting rice and sugar.
African slaves -- note, AFRICAN SLAVES, typically enslaved by Arabs or
conquering Islamic kingdoms -- were available, and if the Portugese,
Dutch, Spanish and English extended and commercialized the trade, it was a
trade which had existed long before Columbus sighted the West Indies.
How absurd to imply, as Axel does, that the people of the British Isles
went forth to conquer like the Nazis and Soviets, with no other purpose
but to crush and oppress other people.

>Whip and brand

Whipping and branding, Axel? How common were whippings? How common was
branding? Did the slave who had proven his dilligence, honesty and
trustworthiness -- and I think it would be racist to say that slaves were
not generally so -- really have to face such treatments? I doubt it.

WHAT THE HELL? "Destruction of the class enemy" -- who are you talking
about here? What a strange note this is.
