no votes for mother bickerdyke
Besides, I can visit her grave if and when the urge strikes me ... :-)

None of the above. I vote for Emily Warren.
JFE
she was very capable, but a "babe" no.
And she'll be lying there waiting for you.
How predictable. :)

Gotta go with Kate.

I will put in a vote for Wickie Woodhull's baby sister Tennessee
Celeste Claflin--see her here:

Now can we go for the handsomest man in uniforem? All men are supposed
to be gorgeous in a uniform.
If Jane will join in there will be two of us.
My choice is none. Too much facial hair but the best is McPherson, he
is kind of jaunty.
Well, the way he met death is rather interesting--tipping his hat to
the men who shot him--rather a cheerful soul, I guess. But I follow
Lynn regarding facial hair--too much tends to obscure, not enhance the
features.
However, I guess I have to hold up the distaff end of this group, so
I'm using for my picture sources this website in case you may want to
reconsider your no vote there, Lynn:

As I meander around, I cast these votes for early clean-shaven pictures
of future Civil Warriors--Bowdoin professor Joshua Lawrence
Chamberlain, USMA Cadets Robert E Lee & Phil Sheridan (darkly handsome,
but really really short), Rutherford B Hayes in his wedding photo and
Thomas Jonathan Jackson in his dress uniform and side whiskers--I would
also put in a vote for that Frenchman PGT Beauregard, another shorty,
and another for Oliver Otis Howard--nice eyes--but I think my alltime
handsomest man in uniform would probably be Brigadier General Strong
Vincent USA who was killed at Little Round Top, with a close second to
Joshua Chamberlain's brother Tom, dark and handsome, followed by Daniel
Harvey Hill.

Not a Grant strength. :)
At the time , the ladies were taken with JEB, loaded him down with
flowers. How come we didn't pick him I wonder?
Going by letters, etc, so many of the men in the war were very fond of
their wives and children. Nice thought.
probably because he wasn't on a horse--girls tend to like guys on
horseback, for some reason--so I guess that's how Grant appealed to
Julia Dent. Jeb ain't bad looking in pre-beard pictures, but for some
reason, he's not my cup of tea.
BTW, one of my neices (age 16) has e-mailed me asking me to put in a
vote for James A Garfield--the first picture looks like he's in high
school or something--and her mother, my sister Rae, tells me to put in
a vote for George Washington Custis Lee, son of Robert E (figures), but
I'll stick with Strong Vincent. It is a shame as he was only twenty-six
when he died.
JML
Julia would disagree. : )

What's wrong with John Gibbon, or Alexander Webb? How about Charles Russell
Lowell? Isaac Stevens, Emory Upton, or Galusha Pennypacker (a very young
general!).
You gals never know where you can find gold, you know.
Maybe one of you can put up a site loaded with CW ladies like this one. <g>

well, maybe one of you guys can--we can always act as consultants,
maybe.
Young General Pennypacker--another one of you Pennsylvania people--does
has nice eyes, according to my sister.
Another one of my neices wants to put in her vote for Thomas J Jackson
in his pre-Stonewall days, and I have to mention that her fiancee does
favor that fella both in face and some manners (he's studying to be
ordained a Presbyterian minister, and IMO, although he is one of the
sweetest men I ever met, there is something decidedly odd about him at
times--he doesn't like lemons, tho)so she may be somewhat unduly
influenced by that (sorry Jackie!)
It is interesting to put the faces to the names and actions of these
fellows, though--some look sufficiently heroic, others like they know
they have no business wearing these uniforms.

Indeed, some of them had no business wearing the uniform, and that includes
some of the pre-war professionals from West Point, too.
Consultant, eh? Hmmmm.

There's a new biography of her and her husband out. Should I
get you a copy?
JFE
Actually I did consider J.Gibbon because I do what he looked like, but
the others you mentioned, Jeff, I didn't. Jane's website came after my
choice and I am not a fickle lady.
BTW, Jane, I meant Jeb Stuart who is a horseman par excellance :).
Sorry forgot to put in his last name.
Anyway we had a lot more men to choose from than they did women. Ha.
I have no doubt that your husband is very pleased that you are not
fickle (smile)

understood as much, and you answered my query here--they say it's
another reason why George A Custer was so desirable, although I can't
see it.

many interesting choices to peruse, yes indeed!
