‘Finding Your Roots’: Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s on PBS.

Sunday night they traced a black comedien (Wanda Sykes) family. What
they discovered is that her family was not freed with abolition in
1865. They were already free in Virginia. So they used all
available records and discovered that one branch of her family had
been free since 1683. That is right. They had been free blacks
-- in Virginia -- 100 years before the Revolution.

What's more, one of her ancestors had volunteered and served as a free
soldier in the Revolution. I wonder if any fought for Virginia
in the Civil War ?

How did it happen ? Back in the 1680s, her 9th
Great-Grandfather (a slave) got a white indentured servant girl
pregnant. In those days, a child was whatever her it's mother was.
So this mulatto child was born free. It grew up and married a free
black man. From then until now, that family have been free.
Prior to the 20th century, they lived most of those years in the
slave state of virginia.

That was quite a story.
