Carter put the credit where he thinks it belongs, with the Canadians
involved. History movies get some things right, but unless you go
through them in detail, you won't know which parts are correct.

Those of us who followed the news at the time learned in general that it
was the Canadian diplomats who organized things. But that was over
thirty years ago, and much of the population has no actual memory of the
matter. Such persons often get what they think they know from
Hollywood and TV.

I have to admit I was surprised a few days ago when I read an article
about Carter's grandson being responsible for that "47%" tape about
Romney.

After all these years, I had finally begun to like Carter. Now I'm
faced with the unsettling realization that had it not been for his
grandson -- Obama would probalby have been defeated. And we'd be
better off :-)

I had no use for Bush either, but for different reasons. Say what
you will about him, Dubya was a very capable chief executive. He
did exactly what he was sent to Washington to do. He started two
wars that gave profits and security to the two entities who owned him.

When corporations control the government, that could be taken as facism. Sounds like what has/is happening in the U.S. where corporations control the politicians and draft policy for state and federal legislation.

Fascism tends to control corporations and means of production rather than the
other way around. Kind of like communism does. That's one of the reasons I've
just begun to label communists and fascists the same.
Corporations are collections of people, like unions are a collection of
people. Either will try and promote their welfare. It's to be expected. I

Actually a corporation is a legal entity. At least as defined by our
overlords on the Supreme Court. True, a corporation has the power
and wealth that belongs to millions of people. But when it comes
down to making a decision -- that decision is made by one man. The
CEO. So that one man has the power of millions in his vote. And
at the end of the year, that one man gets a bonus of many millions of
dollars for using his power to buy politicians -- who we erroneously
think represent us.

Yes ...as much as I hate to admit it -- we have become a fascist
state. Not a lot different from those states that selected Benito
and Adolph for their leader.

The problem is the 1st amendment rule against infringement of freedom of
speech. I think we can easily see that that protects human beings; but
does it protect some associations of human beings (of which corporations
are an instance).

I'm not sure how far judges ought to go in denying Congress power to
regulate these matters. What the question is one of actual human
persons, I'd like more judicial watchfulness than in the question of
corporations (profit or non-profit) who seem to have a lot of money to
throw around.

I'd like to see more public discussion about what is effective, a good
idea, etc., and maybe less about rights. There are free countries, as
you know, which lack the great emphasis on rights that is typical of
the US. But the actual situation is, we have this written constitution,
and a tradition of arguing about what it means.

We also have this long tradition that the most important language in
which to discuss public affairs is the language of rights. Everybody
sooner or later appeals to the language of rights when it is to his
advantage.

Right. People sometimes exaggerate for emphasis. The problem comes when
the hyperbole is repeated so often that it comes to be taken as a
factual statement, rather than as an expression of a political
sentiment.

I wasn't being ironic; I just wanted to say that exaggeration for
emphasis can come to be seen as a factual statement. The difference
between me and those guys is this: they wanted to use this possibility
as a means of increasing tryannical control, while I have no such
